Javelinas Improve to 4-0

Joe Williams picks up some yards against NSU  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The 1-2 punch of Connell Davis (Gregory/Gregory-Portland HS) and Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Col. of the Canyons) and the passing arm of Billy Garza (Brownsville/Porter HS) was more than enough to lead #7 Texas A&M-Kingsville past Lone Star Conference North Division rival Northeastern State on Saturday night at Javelina Stadium, 31-14. (box score)

Both Davis and Winborn approached the 100-yard rushing mark, but neither eclipsed the total.  Winborn led the team with a season high 94 yards on 15 carries while adding three catches for 43 yards.  He found paydirt twice in the game.  Davis pounded out 89 yards on just 10 carries and scored once.  He also had one catch for 17 yards.

Garza was his usual self passing for over 300 yards for the seventh time in his career.  He went 24-of-32 for 314 yards and two touchdowns.  The 75 percent completion was his highest career completion percentage.
The scoring in the game began late in the first quarter on the Javelinas’ second drive of the game.  Winborn touched the ball on five of six plays and capped off the drive with a 14-yard score off a pass from Garza with 4:55 left.  The Hogs marched 66 yards in 2:32 and did not face a single third down.

On the team’s next possession, the Hoggies drove 86 yards to score just as the first quarter buzzer sounded.  Garza went 3-for-4 on the drive for 48 yards and then Davis finished it off.  He picked up a 17-yard gain and then rumbled in from nine yards out for his sixth touchdown of the season.

The RiverHawks cut the lead in half midway through the second quarter when they took advantage of a failed fake punt by the Javelinas.  A penalty on third-and-6 kept the drive alive for NSU and quarterback Woody Wilson made the Hoggies pay when he found Ed Victorian in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard score with 6:29 to play in the first half.

It looked like the game would go into the break at 14-7, but the Javelinas were able to score just before halftime.  Garza racked up 79 yards on the drive with the big play being a 43-yard pass to E.J. LeBlanc (Beaumont/Texas State) to give the team a first down across midfield.  Garza was able to find Darryl Malone (Mesquite/North Mesquite HS) for a pick-up of 21 yards and then went back to LeBlanc for a 12-yard score with 0:37 left in the half.  Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) converted all three point after tries.

In the third quarter, the Javelinas had a potential touchdown scoring drive going when things bogged down at the NSU 27-yard line.  Brom booted a season long 44-yard field goal with 5:13 left in the quarter to make it a 24-7 ball game.  Brom is now 5-for-5 on the season in field goal attempts.

The third quarter ended with the Hoggies in the midst of a long 12-play, 95-yard scoring drive that took up 5:35 on the clock.  The team converted three third downs on the drive and it was Winborn scoring from four yards out to give the team a 31-7 advantage.

Northeastern threatened to score a few minutes later when Wilson found Victorian for a 63-yard gain to the Hoggie 4-yard line, but Robert McCormick (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) forced a fumble on the next play and Hector Sobers (San Antonio/Judson HS) was there to fall on it at the 1-yard line.

The RiverHawks would finally score again with 2:59 to play on a Wilson 20-yard pass to Anthony Moody.

The onside kick attempt failed and the Javelinas ran out the clock.

The Javelinas gained 530 yards on the night with 314 coming through the air and 216 on the ground.  More importantly, the team did not have a turnover in the game and held possession for 36:14.  The Hogs converted 6-of-12 third-down attempts and were 4-for-4 in the red zone.

Garza spread the ball around to eight different receivers.  Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) had five catches for 75 yards while Damian Couthren (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) had five grabs for 44 yards.  LeBlanc led the team with 83 yards receiving on four catches.

Once again the Javelina defense was stout against both the run and the pass save the one 63-yard gain.  They held the RiverHawks to 165 yards passing and just 76 rushing on 29 carries.  DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) led the team with seven tackles and a half sack.  Eric John (Miami, FL/UM-Crookston) added six tackles and two pass break ups at corner back.  Defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen (Houston/Forest Brook HS) clogged up the running lanes with five tackles, including 1.5 for loss.

The RiverHawks were led by their quarterback Woody Wilson.  He finished the game 10-for-14 for 139 yards and two touchdowns passing and he picked up a team high 56 yards on the ground on 16 carries.  Victorian had 83 yards on two receptions while Moody added 36 yards on two catches.  Punter Joe Kok was a small bright spot for the team with a 46.8 yard average and three punts inside the 20-yard line on six chances.
The NSU defense had three players with double figure tackles.  Terrance Gaston led the way with 13 stops while Nick Dobler added 11 and Donald Dangerfield had 10.  Shantel Mackey had the team’s lone sack.

The Javelinas are now 4-0 for the first time since the 2004 season when they started out 7-0 en route to a conference title and NCAA Playoff berth.  Garza moved into ninth all-time in career passing yards (3,817) for the Javelinas and tied for seventh in touchdown passes (31).

The Javelinas are back in action next Saturday at LSC South rival West Texas A&M in the division opener at 6 o’clock.
