Winborn Sets Record in Win

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – It does not happen very often that a player can break a record held by the legendary Johnny Bailey, but on Saturday night Texas A&M-Kingsville junior running back Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Grant HS) broke Bailey’s 22-year old single game rushing record en route to leading the #14 Javelinas (8-1, 6-1, 3-1) past visiting Lone Star Conference South Division rival Eastern New Mexico (2-7, 2-6, 0-5), 38-31 on Homecoming in front of 14,000 fans.  (box score)

Winborn, or “Hollywood” as he is known to his teammates, broke the record on a 32-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.  He finished the night with 263 yards, nine more than Bailey had against West Texas A&M on October 31, 1987.  Winborn had 37 carries and scored three touchdowns.

The Javelinas had the Greyhounds on the ropes a number of times, but the visitors proved to be resilient behind the passing of J.J. Harp and rushing of Stefan Mills.  Harp finished the night 36-for-53 for 324 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  Mills rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries after carrying the ball only 13 times all season heading into the game.

The game began exactly how a Homecoming game should with the Javelinas driving 78 yards in eight plays and scoring a touchdown on a 16-yard Winborn run.  A little later in the quarter junior safety DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) stepped in front of a Harp pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown, his second of the season.

The Greyhounds responded with their own 10-play, 66-yard drive that took only 2:41.  Mills plunged in from the 1-yard line with 2:57 left in the quarter.

The Hoggies tacked on their third touchdown of the night just 1:54 into the second quarter when Winborn leaped over the pile from one yard out.

The Javelina defense came up large on the next drive as the Greyhounds were driving.  On a third-and-1 at the Hoggie 36-yard line, Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) burst through the line and forced Harp to throw the ball away.  On fourth down, Justin Chambers (Ingleside/Ingleside HS) and Jeff Edwards (Houston/Westside HS) wrapped up Mills for no gain.  The Javs quickly moved the ball down the field and Connell Davis (Gregory/Gregory-Portland HS) slashed his way for a 17-yard score to make it 28-7 with 8:38 left in the first half.

The Greyhounds fired right back driving 60 yards in just 1:33.  Harp hit Darian Dale for a 2-yard score, but Taylor Cannon’s kick missed left.  The two teams went to the break with the Javs up 28-13.

At the start of the third quarter each team went three-and-out on their initial drives.  The Greyhounds got the ball back at their own 16-yard line and methodically drove down the field converting two third downs in the process.  Mills capped off the drive with a 1-run scoring run.  Once again, Cannon missed the extra point and the score was 28-19 with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter.

It appeared the Javelinas would go up 35-19 a few minutes later when they had a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line.  Unfortunately, Winborn fumbled on the goal line and the ball was batted back to the 12-yard line before Winborn eventually came up with it.  The Javs had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) with 2:20 to go in the period.

The third quarter ended when the Greyhounds blocked their second punt of the game giving themselves excellent field position at their own 41-yard line.  Fortunately, the Hoggie defense was up to the challenge as they stopped ENMU for the second time on fourth down.

After another Javelina punt, the Greyhounds embarked on a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive that took 4:23.  Mills carried the ball eight times on the drive, including an 18-yarder that set up a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line.  The Hoggies stopped the first three tries, but on fourth down Harp found Arvin Jackson for a three-yard score with 5:30 to play.  The two-point conversion failed and the Javs led 31-25.

The Greyhounds tried an onside kick and recovered the ball, but were whistled for off-sides.  The Javs recovered the next onside try and Winborn galloped in on the next play from 32 yards out.

That score still did not finish the Greyhounds as they scored in 1:52 on a Harp pass to Chase Kyser.  A bad snap on the extra point turned into a John Reeves interception that he returned to midfield before being tackled.

Once again, the Javelinas recovered the onside kick.  With 2:27 remaining in the game the Hoggies faced a third-and-3 at the ENMU 32-yard line.  With everyone thinking Winborn would get the ball, senior quarterback Billy Garza (Brownsville/Porter HS) called his own number and picked up four yards for the first down.  The Javelinas were then able to run out the clock and pick up the tough victory.

Each team picked up 30 first downs on the night.  The Javs had 17 rushing, nine passing and four by penalty while the Hounds had nine rushing, 18 passing and three by penalty.

The Hogs rushed for a season high 322 yards on 48 attempts.  They finished the game with 455 yards of total offense and held the ball for 33:56.  In addition to Winborn, Garza had 33 yards rushing and Davis add 31.  Garza went 15-for-28 passing for 133 yards.  Junior Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) led the team with four catches for 65 yards.

Garza became just the second player in school history to pass for at least 2,000 yards in two different seasons joining Daniel Taylor who did it in 2003 and 2004.  Lincoln moved into fifth place all-time with 129 catches for 1,872 yards.

Winborn became the first Javelina with over 200 yards rushing in game since Larry Williams had 246 yards against West Texas A&M on September 25, 2004.  He was also the first Hoggie with at least 200 all-purpose yards since Raymorris Miller had 207 against East Central in 2007.

Defensively, the Javelinas were led by Marc Kinney (Lavernia/Lavernia HS) who had a team high 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks from his defensive back position.  Matt Romig (Bells/Bells HS) added six tackles and two sacks to give him a team high six on the season.  Reeves and Sanders each added nine tackles.

The Greyhounds gained 135 yards on the ground and 324 through the air for a total of 459 yards.  They conducted 96 offensive plays, the most of any team the Hoggies have faced this year.  In addition to his 324 yards passing, Harp added 29 yards on the ground on 14 carries.  Dominic Preston led the receiving corp with 11 catches for 120 yards.  Jackson finished with 10 receptions for 94 yards and a score.  Four other players had at least three catches.

Edward Zamora led the Greyhound defense with 16 tackles, a forced fumble and one tackle for loss.  Mark Patterson added 12 tackles.

The Javelinas moved into a two-way tie for first place in the Lone Star Conference after Tarleton State knocked off Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M defeated Angelo State.  The Hoggies travel to ACU for a 2 o’clock kick off next Saturday at Shotwell Stadium.
