Javelinas Get On Track

Sha Tramble  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team picked up a big confidence boost on Tuesday night as they steam rolled University of Texas at Brownsville in three sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 at the Steinke Center. (box score)
The Javelinas (4-11) started the match quickly as they scored the first seven points and led 11-1 before the Scorpions (1-13) could catch their breath.  The second set was a little different as UT-Brownsville put together their best stretch of play taking an 11-8 lead midway through the set.  That seemed to wake up the Hoggies as they scored 13 of the next 15 points to take the set.  The final set was all Javelinas as they out scored UTB 17-7 to close out the match.
“We wanted to play lose and have fun,” said head coach Shannon Alvarado.  “It’s been awhile since we had fun.  I really thought the team played well tonight.”
The Javelinas were led by sophomore Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS) who had 11 kills without an attack error while posting a team best .579 attack percentage.  Senior Shaday Smith (Houston/Jones HS) and freshman Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) combined for 15 kills as well.  Junior setter Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) directed the offense with 22 assists and helped out with eight digs and three service aces.  Junior Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) and sophomore Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) each had double figure digs to lead the defense.  The sister duo of Casey and Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) combined for four blocks.
As a team, the Javs tallied 39 kills and a .310 attack percentage on offense.  Defensively, the team held the Scorpions to a .032 attack for the match.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State at 2 o’clock.
