Javelinas Win Two in a Row

Texas A&M-Kingsville senior quarterback Billy Garza (Brownsville/Porter HS) made a superstar performance look easy in the Javelinas’ 41-6 victory at Lone Star Conference rival University of Central Oklahoma on Saturday at Wantland Stadium.

Garza, a member of the University of Illinois football program the last four years, has improved with each game and he exploited the Bronchos (0-3, 0-2) defense to the tune of 24-of-38 passing for 350 yards and two touchdowns while throwing just one interception.  In his three games he has nearly doubled his output each game going from 95 to 184 to 350 yards.

“Billy has really taken over the reigns of our offense,” said Javelina head coach Bo Atterberry.  “He reads the defense very well and takes what is given to him without forcing the issue.”

While Garza may have been the top player in the game, he was by no means the only Javelina (2-1, 1-0) star.  Early in the game, it was the special teams and defense that got the Javelinas started up.  Sophomore place kicker Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) kicked field goals of 37 and 41 yards in the first quarter, both were career longs.  Junior punter Cody Smith (Kingwood/Kingwood HS) booted a career long 62-yard punt and a 35-yarder that was downed at the 6-yard line in the first half.  The first play after Smith’s second punt resulted in a Javelina touchdown as senior Jabir Perkins (Irving/Nimitz HS) recovered a bad snap in the end zone with 7:33 remaining in the first half to give the Hogs a 13-3 lead.

The Javs tacked on another touchdown before the half when they embarked on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was punctuated by Myron Brew’s (San Antonio/Jay HS) first career touchdown, a 1-yard plunge.

In the third quarter, the Javelina passing game hit full stride.  Garza completed seven straight passes to start the half.  He found sophomore Damian Couthren (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) in the corner of the end zone for his first scoring pass of the game.

Later in the third quarter, Garza accumulated 82 yards of offense as he went 3-for-5 for 67 yards in the air and rushed 15 yards on the ground.  He found senior Jareko Taylor (Detroit, MI/Ford HS) on a fourth-and-5 conversion from the UCO 30-yard line that turned into a touchdown when Taylor dove to the goal line for his second score of the season.

The Javelinas tacked on one more score in the fourth quarter.  Junior Logan Morris (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) guided the team on a 5-play, 23-yard scoring drive after Eric John (Miami, FL/Miami Senior HS) intercepted his first pass of the season.  Morris ran the ball in from two yards out for his second touchdown of the year.

The defense stifled the running game for the second straight week limiting the Bronchos to just 20 yards on 20 carries.  In addition to his touchdown, Perkins had a team high six tackles and recovered two fumbles in the game.  Senior Tyrell Herndon (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS) and junior Jeff Edwards (Houston/Westside HS) each recorded sacks while the team had five tackles for loss during the game.

The offensive line finally allowed its first sack of the season, but it did not prevent them from leading the running game to nearly 200 yards and a 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession.  Brew led the team with 69 yards rushing while senior Billy Martin (Pittsburg/Pittsburg HS) added 59 yards on the ground.

The Javelina wide receiving core had a strong game as Taylor and sophomore Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) each had over 100 yards receiving.  Taylor had eight catches for 103 yards while Lincoln finished with four catches for 110 yards.  Senior Clavens Charles (Miami, FL/Southwest HS) had six catches for 71 yards and had a 50-yard reception called back due to a penalty.

Central Oklahoma passed for 223 yards and completed 25-of-48 attempts.  Daniel Morrell was the top option for the Bronchos as he had seven catches for 97 yards.  Terrence Hill and T.J. Shaw each had at least 10 tackles in the game for the defense while Freddie Harris had two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.

Today’s game was moved from Javelina Stadium in Kingsville to Edmond, Oklahoma due to Hurricane Ike.  Central Oklahoma will return to Kingsville next year giving the Javelinas seven home games in 2009.

The Javelinas are on the road again next week at Northeastern Oklahoma on Saturday night at 7 o’clock.  The game can be listened to online at http://www.teamline.cc/teampage?teamcode=7836.  The game is also available on ESPN 1230 AM, KOPY-FM (92.1), KTAI-FM (91.1) and KNAL (1410).
