Javelinas Knock off Scorpions

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team picked up their second straight road victory on Wednesday night when they defeated UT-Brownsville in three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-15. (box score)
The Javelinas (9-16) controlled play from the start for the second straight match and cruised to the victory.  Senior Shaday Smith (Houston/Jones HS) led the team with nine kills and four blocks while raising her season attack percentage to .222, the highest it has been this year.  The key to the match was not the Hoggie offense, but rather their defense.
The Javs held the Scorpions (7-17) to a -.114 attack in the second set and a -.051 attack in the third set.   A&M-Kingsville only had five blocks in the match, but dug the ball extremely well with sophomore Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) leading all players with 16 digs.  Junior Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) added 10 digs.
UTB’s Chelsea Spadaro led all players with 11 kills, but it could not make up for the team’s overall attack percentage of .010.  Anayeli Trevino led the squad with 10 digs while Jacque Touchet added six blocks.
The Javelinas travel to St. Mary’s University on Friday for a 7 o’clock match.
