Javelinas Win on Homecoming

Billy Martin  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team defeated Lone Star Conferenc rival Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday night before a Homecoming crowd of 10,532 at Javelina Stadium, 35-0. (box score)
The Javelinas (5-2, 4-1) used the second straight 100-yard rushing performance by Billy Martin (Pittsburg/Pittsburg HS) to control the game.  Martin scored on runs of 28 and 66 yards and caught a 16-yard pass for a touchdown.  He rushed for 165 yards on 16 carries giving him 343 yards rushing in his last two games.
The first quarter was uneventful as the Lions (3-4, 3-3) punted once and did not convert a fourth down while the Hogs punted once and lost a fumble.
In the second quarter, a Clavens Charles (Miami, FL/Southwest HS) 19-yard punt return gave the Javelinas good field position at the Commerce 44-yard line.  A 10-yard run by Martin and a 6-yard reception by Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) set up Martin’s first touchdown, a 28-yard scamper around the right end.  Freshman Cameron Schultz (Brenham/Brenham HS) tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0 with 12:58 remaining in the first half.
Kingsville freshman Derrick Thomas (San Antonio/Jay HS) picked off a pass from Terry Mayo on the ensuing possession, but the Javelinas were unable to convert it into points by not converting on a fourth down.
The Lions drove 47 yards to the Javelina 34-yard line before getting slowed down and failing to convert their own fourth down attempt.
The Javelinas took the opportunity to march 66 yards in seven plays.  Sophomore Darryl Malone (Mesquite/North HS) caught two passes on the drive, including a career long 35-yarder.  Two plays later Martin caught a pass near the right sideline and out ran the defense to the pylon for a 16-yard scoring play with 4:41 left in the quarter.
The Lions were thwarted in their attempt to score before the half when junior Jimmy Saddler-McQueen (Houston/Forest Brook HS) recovered a fumble snap at the TAMC 37-yard line.  Four plays later, senior Jareko Taylor (Detroit, MI/Ford HS) made an unbelievable catch in the end zone on a 21-yard pass from senior Billy Garza (Brownsville/Porter HS) with 14 seconds left in the half.  Taylor’s grab was his 14th career touchdown reception and 89th career catch moving him into seventh place all-time and 10th place all-time, respectively.
The second half was pedestrian save for a few highlight film runs.  First, Martin out ran the entire Lion secondary scoring on a career-long 66-yard run with 9:13 to play in the game.  The final score came when freshman Myron Brew (San Antonio/Jay HS) looked to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, but kept twisting and turning and eventually burst out of the pile to score on a 23-yard run, his only carry of the night.
The Javelinas finished with 384 yards of total offense with 200 coming on the ground.  In addition to Martin and Brew, junior Joe Williams (Houston/Forest Brook HS) carried the ball four times for 37 yards.  Garza finished the game an efficient 16-of-25 for 178 yards and two touchdowns.  Malone finished with a career-high five catches for 63 yards.
On special teams, Charles finished with four punt returns for an average of 10 yards per pop and one kickoff return for 37 yards.  Schultz was a perfect 5-for-5 on PAT’s in his first career game.  Junior Cody Smith (Kingwood/Kingwood HS) did a good job of getting his punts away quickly averaging 43.4 yards on five kicks with only one being returned a total of five yards.
The Javelina defense had five sacks on the night and was led by senior linebacker Mike Martinez (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS).  Martinez led the team with nine tackles and a sack.  Junior defensive end Jimmy Lugo (Alice/Alice HS) had five tackles, including 1.5 for loss while senior linebacker Arlen Childress (Humble/Humble HS) had two tackles for loss and a sack totaling 22 yards lost.  The Hogs held the Lions to just 173 yards of offense, a season low.  It was the first shutout by a Javelina defense since shutting out East Central, 28-0 on September 10, 2005.
The Lions were led offensively by running back Nabil El-Amin’s 15 carries for 69 yards.  Starting quarterback Terry Mayo went 10-of-27 for 86 yards and an interception while his backup, Trent Miller was 4-of-7 for 39 yards.
The Lion defense provided a strong rush for most of the night accumulating four sacks.  Courtney Edmond led the squad with 11 tackles while Andrew Gamboa made seven stops, forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles.
The Lions struggled on third and fourth down situations going a combined 3-for-21 on the night.
This was the 56th meeting between the two teams with the Javelinas holding a 34-21-1 advantage.
