Javelinas Fall To Incarnate Word

San Antonio – Despite a season-high 14 kills from junior Shaday Smith, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas dropped a 3-0 decision at Incarnate Word Saturday.

Smith (Houston Jones), who missed nearly all of last season with a knee injury, led the Javelinas with 14 kills. Freshman Mollie Biega (Cypress Creek) had 11 kills and hit .391 while sophomore Adina Gray (Four Bluff) had seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage.

Heidi Scheopner (Harlingen South) had 18 assists and 10 digs while Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels Canyon) added 17 assists and five digs.

In game one, the two teams were tied at 28 when Incarnate Word won the final two points to take the opener.

The Javelinas struggled in game two, hitting just .085 as a team and after an early 6-6 tie, the Cardinals ran off a 10-1 run on the way to a 30-20 game two win.

A&M-Kingsville bounced back in game three to hit .175, but Incarnate Word jumped out to a 5-0 lead and had at least a four point lead until the Javelinas cut it to 27-25.

But Incarnate Word scored three of the final four points to win the match.
