Durant, Okla. - Freshman receiver Ryan Richardson (Edinburg Economedes HS) caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Jeremy Heatley (Breckenridge HS) with 22 seconds in the game to give the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas an improbable 31-28 win over #19 Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The Javelinas and Savage Storm are both 2-2 on the year.
The Savage Storm had a 28-24 lead and punted with less than a minute left in the game, but freshman Joe Williams fielded the punt at the Javelina 30-yard line and returned it 43 yards to the Southeastern 27-yard line with 28 seconds left in the game.
Southeastern was called for a five-yard penalty and called a timeout to regroup.
On the first play from scrimmage, Heatley scrambled away from pressure and found Richardson in the back of the end zone for his only catch of the night to give the Javelinas the lead.
Senior safety Clayton Cretors (Harlingen High) intercepted a pass with two seconds left to seal the victory.
The Savage Storm outgained the Javelinas 390- to 241, but the Javelinas forced five turnovers and partially blocked a punt while also piling up 203 return yards.
Junior running back Raymorris Miller led the Javelina offense with 83 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. He also had three kickoff returns for 103 yards.
Heatley, after throwing three interceptions last week at Western Oregon, completed 12 of 21 passes for 138 yards, one score and no interceptions.
The Javelinas increased their lead to 24-13 early in the second half, converting a turnover on the kickoff to start the second half into a Miller 12-yard touchdown run.
But the Savage Storm scored twice in the fourth quarter, the go- ahead touchdown coming on a 15-yard pass from Justin Pitrucha to Jimmie Dailey that capped a 91-yard drive with 5:46 left in the game.
The Javelina drive then stalled at their own 30-yard, they were forced to punt and Southeastern actually picked up a first down, forced the Javelinas to burn all their timeouts and seemingly had the game in hand before William's game-changing punt return.
Texas A&M-Kingsville hosts West Texas A&M Saturday night in Kingsville.
