SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team dropped a Lone Star Conference match to St. Mary's University on Friday afternoon, falling 3-4 at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.
The Javelinas took an early lead in doubles, winning two of three courts to grab the advantage heading into singles. The 26th-ranked duo of Maya Donkor and Guadalupe Tocci made a statement at court one, taking down the 33rd-ranked pair 6-4. Andrea Landaeta and Annika Andersson Gomez followed with a 6-4 win at court two to put Kingsville in a strong position. St. Mary's took the third doubles point by forfeit, but the Javelinas still carried the doubles edge into singles play.
In singles, the match swung in St. Mary's favor across the top and bottom of the lineup. St. Mary's claimed the sixth court by forfeit early, and Kaitlin Blount fell at court five. Landaeta was composed and controlled at court three, cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 victory, and Andersson Gomez continued her strong season at court four, winning 6-3, 6-3 dominantly to keep Kingsville in it. Donkor fell in a competitive three-setter at court one, leaving it all on the line for Tocci at court two. Tocci battled hard, taking the second set to force a third, but ultimately fell in the decider as St. Mary's secured the decisive point to take the match 4-3.
The Javelinas fall to 4-9 on the season and return home next weekend, hosting Western New Mexico on Friday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. and Sul Ross State on Saturday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m. at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
