Kingsville - In a fitting end to the home schedule, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team defeated UT Dallas 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Javelina Tennis Courts on Senior Day, improving to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play. The win extended the Javelinas' winning streak to four matches, all coming in conference play and all at home.
UT Dallas took the doubles point, winning two of three courts to grab the early 1-0 lead. Andrea Landaeta and Annika Andersson Gomez provided the lone doubles win for Kingsville, taking their court 6-2 to keep the point competitive, but the Comets secured the advantage heading into singles.
In singles, the Javelinas responded in a big way. Landaeta got things going at No. 3, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to put Kingsville on the board. Maya Donkor followed with a gutsy three-set performance at No. 1, dropping the second set before rallying to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Andersson Gomez delivered in what was the final home match of her Javelina career at No. 4, coming back from a first set deficit to win 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 and extend her singles winning streak to 10 matches in a row. Guadalupe Tocci then closed out the clinching point at No. 2 in a thrilling tiebreak victory, winning 6-4, 7-6 [7-5] to seal the win on Senior Day.
UT Dallas picked up points at No. 5 and No. 6, but the Javelinas had already done enough to secure the victory and send their three seniors out on the highest of notes.
The Javelinas close out the regular season on the road, traveling to Lubbock to face Lubbock Christian University on Thursday at noon before heading to Odessa to take on UT Permian Basin on Friday at noon in their final two LSC matches of the season.
