Kingsville, TX – In one of the biggest wins of the season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team knocked off No. 27 UT Tyler 4-3 Thursday afternoon at the Javelina Tennis Courts, improving to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Javelinas took the doubles point, winning two of three courts to grab the early 1-0 lead. The No. 20-ranked pair of Guadalupe Tocci and Maya Donkor got things started with a 6-3 victory over the No. 16-ranked duo at the top of the lineup. Kaitlin Blount and Yasmin El Fadili closed out the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3, giving Kingsville the early advantage despite dropping the No. 2 court.
In singles, UT Tyler drew first with a forfeit win at No. 6 before the Javelinas answered back. Annika Andersson Gomez got Kingsville on the board at No. 4, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory to continue her standout senior season. Donkor then delivered the signature performance of the afternoon at No. 1, dismantling the No. 10-ranked Yona Bancreal 6-1, 6-1 in one of the most dominant individual efforts of the season. UT Tyler pulled back within reach with a win at No. 5, setting the stage for Tocci to deliver. The senior did not disappoint.
Down a set and facing a ranked opponent, Tocci dug deep and refused to let the moment pass, rallying from a first set deficit to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and clinch the upset for the Javelinas. It was the kind of performance that defines a season. Andrea Landaeta dropped a hard-fought three-set match at No. 3 after the result was already decided, but the damage had been done. The Javelinas had knocked off a top 30 program on their home court.
Kingsville improves to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in LSC play and will look to carry the momentum into Saturday's Senior Day matchup against UT Dallas at 11:00 AM at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
