Kingsville - Texas A&M - Kingsville competed in the Lone Star Conference Championships in Rockwall, Texas, and came out in ninth place out of the 13 teams that competed in the Championship. One of the best finishes in Javelina history since merging with the Heartland Conference in 2019.
Finishing on top of the scorecard for the Javelinas was
Mekdes Rozas. She had a strong round one to open up the tournament, scoring a 74 (+2) and tied for sixteenth, and would continue her performance for the rest of round two and heading into round three. Rozas would finish the tournament 12-over par and tied for 26th at the end.Â
Not too far behind, tied with each other at 28th in the tournament were
Zoe Dean and
Viviana Farias. After a shaky day one, Dean headed into day two 10-over par, scoring a 78 (+6) and 76 (+4). In round three, Dean would hop back on track with a three-over-par round. The same would go for Farias, who was 11-over par going into round three, but would close out the tournament going two-over par, and both Javelinas jumped multiple spots for a top-30 finish.
Mia Scrimgeour would open up the tournament with the fire she had going into the tournament, shooting a 76 (+4) in round one of the tournament. Over the next two rounds, she would slow down slightly and finish the tournament +25 and finish 48th in the tournament.
Jamie Miller would finish not too far behind Scrimgeour, sitting at 52nd with a score of +29 over the 54-hole tournament.
"This week at the LSC championship in the stroke play portion, I 100% believe we got a lot of respect from fellow teams, coaches, and the conference office," said Head Coach Troy Lopez.Â
"The first and final rounds were solid with a lot of fight to hold position. Round two was a bit tougher for us as we were finishing the 36-hole stretch. I'm very proud of our players this week for being resilient and keep pushing through adversity when it came in the tournament. For a long time, we were hanging right in the middle, which our program has never done before at this event. We had our best finish at 9th in the LSC championship with this many teams being in the tournament since we absorbed teams from the Heartland Conference a few years ago. All of it shows progress. Once again, I'm super proud of our team to just keep fighting."
With the team season at an end, two Javelinas, Dean and Farias, have a chance of potentially being selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships Super Regional - South Central/West Regions.Â
