Kingsville – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team dropped its Lone Star Conference opener Friday at the Javelina Tennis Center, falling to No. 44 Angelo State and slipping to 4-3 on the season.
The Javelinas claimed the doubles point, winning two of three matches to take an early lead. Kaitlin Blount and Annika Andersson Gomez won convincingly at the second position, while Emma Halvarsson and Andrea Landaeta followed with a strong 6-3 victory of their own to secure the point for Kingsville. The top court pairing of Guadalupe Tocci and Maya Donkor fell 3-6, but the Javelinas had already done enough to take the early advantage.
Angelo State responded in singles play, winning five of six matches to overcome the deficit and secure the victory. Andersson Gomez provided one of the afternoon's most competitive matches, pushing her opponent to three sets before ultimately falling 6-3, 4-6, 2-6. The bright spot of the day came from freshman Halvarsson, who delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-4 victory to provide Kingsville's lone singles win.
The Javelinas fall to 4-3 on the year and will look to regroup as they head to Orlando, Florida for a trio of non-conference matches next week at the USTA National Campus. Kingsville faces the University of Tampa on Monday at 11:30 a.m., Slippery Rock University on Tuesday at noon, and Bryant University on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
