Kingsville - With wins in three of its last five games, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team is hitting the road to begin a home-and-home with the Angelo St. Rambelles in another set of key Lone Star Conference matchups.
Though it is still early in the LSC schedule, the Javelinas enter the week just one game out of a potential LSC Tournament spot (top eight). They will play the Rambelles twice this week, once Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in San Angelo, and again on Saturday when they return to Kingsville for a Military-Day showdown with ASU.
"Our goal is to improve each day and we are doing that," Head Coach
Michael Madrid said. "We have had solid practices and continue to grow effectively."
Since the start of conference play, TAMUK ranks seventh in the LSC in both team field goal percentage and scoring defense, while it sits at sixth in team three-point percentage. Not only that, but it has topped 65 points in all but one of its games so far in 2026, a feat it accomplished only once during the 2025 portion of its schedule, marking a strong positive trend for its offense.Â
"Our focus will be to execute offensively and take what the defense gives us," Madrid said. "We continue to get better every day and that is fun to watch."
Scouting the Competition: The Angelo St. Rambelles (6-9, 4-5 LSC)
After a slow start to their season, which included a five-game losing streak in November and December, they have started the new year strong with wins in three of their last four games.Â
Efficiency has been at the forefront for Angelo State, who has the fifth most three pointers made in the LSC with 7.3 per game, and shooter conference-leading 77.2% from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Majik Esquivel helps lead the team in that regard, as she ranks 15th in the conference in shooting percentage at 44.9%, and is averaging 2.4 three pointers a game, the fourth-most in the LSC. Senior guard Landry Morrow helps to orchestrate the offense to the tune of 2.9 assists in conference play for the ninth best rank in the LSC.Â
Additionally, the team has proved a prominent one on the glass, as the squad ranks top five in the LSC in both total team rebounds and team offensive rebounds, setting this week's pair of contests up to be clashes between two of the better rebounding teams in the LSC.
"Rebounding is simply effort," Madrid said. "We have to remain consistent in our effort on both ends of the floor rebounding wise."
Javelina Quick Hitters:
- Redshirt junior guard Kaycee Groves is coming off a stellar week of play, in which she posted back-to-back double-doubles, and is now the only player in the conference averaging at least 7.0 rebounds per game and 3.4 assists per game in LSC play - she is also putting up 11.6 points per game
- Redshirt junior forward Kaylee Howell has come on strong in recent play, carring a streak of three straight games in which she has set a new single-game career high in scoring into Wednesday's matchup, most recently she dropped a team-high 19 points in a win over TAMIU in Laredo on Saturday
- Freshman guard Jadeyn Perez was spectacular in the first two starts of her collegiate career, highlighted by a 24-point explosion in a win over Oklahoma Christian last Sunday - the most points scored by a Javelina freshman in a conference game since at least the 2013-14 season
- TAMUK has been excellent on the boards so far this year, and is second the conference on the glass, holding opponents to just 31.2 total rebounds per game - Its average rebound margin of +3.5 per game is the fourth-best in the LSC
- Kingsville's offense has improved as the year has gone alone, and now ranks seventh in the conference in team assists per game (13.4) - Groves leads the way in that regard, her 2.9 assists per game are the tenth-most in the LSC - sophomore guard Addisyn Parker's 2.7 are the 12th-most
- In the seven Lone Star Conference games that the team has played so far, Groves leads the team in both scoring (11.6), rebounds (7.1, ninth in the LSC), assists (3.4, fifth in the LSC), steals (2.0), and blocks (6), while Parker has shot the lights out, shooting 45.7% from three (third in the LSC), and making 2.0 per game (ninth in the LSC)
- Sophomore forward Thalia Daniels has had a strong start to her career in the blue and gold, leading the team in rebounding with 6.2 per game
- While she leads a team effort on the glass, the Javelinas' success on the boards has been a team affair, as she is one of five different Javelinas who all average at least 3.8 rebounds per game
- The second-winningest Head Coach in program history, Michael Madrid is beginning his seventh year at the helm for the Javelinas just eight LSC wins from passing Jill Wilson for the most conference wins in program history
- Madrid and the Javelinas are seeking a berth to the LSC Tournament for the second straight year and the fourth time in the last five seasons
