Michael Madrid is entering his seventh season as head coach of Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program after being hired ahead of the 2019-20 season.
Madrid, the 14th coach in the program's history, has 78 wins already under his belt with three Lone Star Conference tournament appearances. He has coached 16 all-conference selections (11 in the past three years) for the Lone Star Conference which includes a sixth-woman-of-the year in 2023-24. He piloted the Javelinas to an upset win over No.5 UT-Tyler in the 2025 LSC Tournament, the program's first win at the tourney since 2017. Twice in the last three season, Madrid has led the team to 18 wins, tied for the most in program history since 1999-00.
Madrid began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Portales High Coach from 1998-2001, he would make a brief stop at Estacado High School for the 2002-03 season before joining Lubbock High School from 2003-05. He would receive his first collegiate coaching opportunity from Lubbock Christian University in 2005.
After five years at Lubbock Christian, Madrid would become an assistant coach at Texas Woman's University from 2010-2013. He would then receive his first opportunity leading a program as the head coach at Paris Junior College. After 2 seasons with the Dragons, Madrid became the head coach at San Jacinto College North in 2015 before landing at UTEP in 2017 as an assistant before joining the Javelinas.
Madrid earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from Eastern New Mexico in 1998 before receiving his master’s degree in sports administration in 2001. He also holds a master’s degree in education administration from Lubbock Christian, which he finished in 2007. Madrid resides in Kingsville with is wife, Sammie, and his daughter, Ryan.
