Kingsville - After yet another stellar indoor season, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams have once again made history, qualifying their largest group ever for the NCAA D2 Indoor Championships, with athletes set to compete in 10 individual events and two relays for the Javelinas
A total of 16 athletes, eight women and eight men, will be travelling for the 2025 Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 13, 14, and 15. The eight women will be competing in five events while the eight men will compete in four different events.
"We're excited to be sending our largest group ever to indoor nationals," Head Coach
Ryan Dall said. "I'm looking forward to watching our athletes compete."
Both the men's and the women's team will be sending their record-breaking 4x400m relay team. Seniors
Vitiana Robert and
Cynai Christopher will join freshmen
Sakara Wade and
Oneika Brissett to make up the women's squad. That quartet, with a historic performance at this season's Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, has already run the seventh-fastest time in D2. Meanwhile the men's crew of senior
Sterling Riles and juniors
Tony Benitez,
Cody Fountain, and
Taylor Chaney, who are fresh off of a school-record-smashing race at the LSC Championships, will be competing as well.
In addition to her anchor leg of the relay, Christopher will also be competing in the women's 400m race, as her 53.98 time from the LSC Championships is the ninth-best in the nation this season. Similarly, Fountain's 1:50.01 800m time from the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic is the 13th-fastest time in the nation, qualifying him for the event at Nationals.
The women also will be sending senior
Madison Alegria who, fresh off of an individual LSC Championship in the event, will be competing in the high jump. Her best jump this year came at the LSC Championships, where she cleared 1.73m. Joining her will be fellow high-jumper, junior
Madison Ramos, whose best jump cleared 1.72m at the Robert Platt Invitational.
Senior
Katryna Hernandez, who was awarded the LSC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete award earlier this week, will be competing in the women's shot put courtesy of her event-winning 15.42m throw at the LSC Championships - the fourth-longest throw in D2 this year. Senior
Jazmin Ray will round out the women's competitors, as she'll be competing in the triple jump. Her best jump of the year, 12.39m at the Howie Ryan Invitational, was not only the eighth-longest in the nation but also smashed her own school record.
Two men will be travelling for the men's shot put - the two men that went one-two in the event at the LSC Championships just last weekend - senior
Ronald Grueso Mosquera and freshman
David Guzman. Grueso Mosquera received the LSC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete award after putting on an individual LSC Championship performance in both the men's shot put and weight throw. Both he and Guzman's best throws of the year came at the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Indoor Last Chance Invitational, where they threw 18.11m and 18.10m respectively.
Rounding out the men travelling to Indy will be the squad's excellent pole vaulters. Senior
Thomas Nieto holds the fourth-heights vault in the nation this year, clearing 5.34m, while junior
Django Segovia has cleared 5.14m, the 11th-best height in D2 this season. Both hit that season record at the LSC Championships, where they went two-three in the event.
