Kingsville - After a hard-fought battle with the Islanders from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team fell, 6-1.
This matchup, the second against a D1 opponent, was the Javelinas' final exhibition match before their season officially starts this Saturday when they travel to San Angelo to play Northeastern State.Â
"Today's matches were solid, building blocks toward building solid confidence," Head Coach
Autumn Wollenzien said. "TAMUCC is always a tough team to play, for that reason, we gain so much to grow with. I'm very proud of the way we played doubles. The singles gave us some momentum heading into the weekend."
The day started well for Kingsville as they split the doubles matches and came within just a few games of taking the points. The duo of graduate student
Luna Jokanovic and junior
Kaitlin Blount made quick work of their Islander opponents, taking them down, 6-3. While senior
Manuela Turolo and junior
Guadalupe Tocci fell 6-3,
Annalena Noll and
Andrea Landaeta forced an extra game, falling in a back-and-forth set, 7-5.
TAMUK's one point came from the final match of the day, as Tocci grabbed a well-earned victory in a long, three-set match that stretched nearly three hours of play, 5-7, 6-4 (10-7). The rest of the Javelinas fell in straight sets in singles.
