More records fall for TAMUK T&F in Boston, Houston

Houston/Boston, MA - The stellar start to the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams' indoor seasons continued as they broke multiple records across two days of competition at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston and the Robert Platt Memorial Invite in Houston.

With full results now posted from both meets, TAMUK collected a staggering total of two school records and four new top 10 performances in the nation in D2 this year. They also added two new top 15 performances.

Courtesy of phenomenal performances on the oval from two different relay teams, TAMUK's indoor 4x400m record fell on both the men's and the women's side in Boston this weekend. The women were the first to accomplish the feat, as Vitiana Robert, Oneika Brissett, Sakara Wade, and Cynai Christopher combined to run a 3:45.75, breaking the old record by more than two full seconds. It was the 13th-fastest in D2 this year. The men followed suit the next day when Sterling Riles, Tony Benitez, Cody Fountain, and Taylor Chaney ran a 3:11.80, breaking the previous record of 3:13.01, which was set in 2022. That is the fifth-fastest time in the nation in D2 this year.

The 4x400m relays weren't the only ones who turned in incredible performances at the Terrier Classic, however, as Cody Fountain, running individually, ran the seventh-fastest 800m time in D2 this season. His 1:50.01 placed 11th at the meet. Running in the women's 400m, Brissett and Robert put up stellar times as well, running the 35th and 45th best times in the nation respectively. Christopher also ran the 400m individually and ran a 55:31, just 1/100th of a second behind her time from the Crimson and Gold Invite in December, which is the ninth-fastest time in D2.

"We are very happy with the contingent we brought up to Boston," Assistant Coach Zachary Hall, who travelled with Head Coach Ryan Dall to the Terrier Classic, said.

The team brought 13 Javelinas to Boston for competition while 36 others were in Houston. The athletes who stayed in state for TAMUK had an amazing showing, particularly in the field. Thomas Nieto, in his second competition of the season, cleared 5.21m in the men's pole vault, the new sixth-best height in the nation. Senior Ronald Mosquera won the men's shot put on Friday, posting a throw of 17.99m, the eighth longest throw in D2 this year. Additionally, Madison Ramos cleared 1.72m in the women's high jump, which would move her into a tie for 14th place in the country.

"The Houston meet went very well," Hall said. "The team accomplished the goals the coaching staff set forth. We had people move up the national list, even more moved up the conference list."

The next two weeks will see the Javelinas travel to Houston twice, first for the second Fastrak Collegiate Invite next Saturday before heading there again in two weeks for the Howie Ryan Invitational.
