Tennis headed to Kansas for matches against Newman, Washburn

Kingsville - After a dominant win to start its year, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team is making the long trip to Kansas for a pair of weekend matches, on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Newman and on Saturday at 1 p.m. against No.11 Washburn.

Last weekend, the Javelinas opened their season with a match in San Angelo against Northeastern St., where they avenged last season's loss with a 6-1 beatdown of the River Hawks. Now, they'll be on the road in the Sunflower state, with their Friday match being played in Wichita, and their Saturday match in Topeka. With cold fronts and snow storms sweeping the midwest, TAMUK will be competing indoors for both matches.

"Everyone is looking forward to the experience of playing indoors and playing well," Head Coach Autumn Wollenzien said. "In the past, Newman has had some good players and I expect nothing less than that. Washburn will be a tougher matchup for us, however, that's what you get excited for."

Newman, like Kingsville, has played just one match so far this season. The Jets hosted the JUCO Pratt Community College Beavers, sweeping them 7-0. Washburn has had a start worthy of its No.11 ranking in this year's opening ITA national rankings. The Ichabods started their season with a 6-1 win over Illinois Springfield in Springfield before sweeping McKendree 7-0. Their most recent match was a showdown with No.5 Midwestern State, who beat them 4-3.

"Playing them this early gets us more experience under our belts that will hopefully pay off later in the spring," Wollenzien said. "We have to continue to build on what we have. All of these things help to do that."
