Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville looks to change history and right the ship against nationally ranked Angelo State Saturday at Javelina Stadium.
It has been quite awhile since the Javelinas (2-3, 1-2 LSC) took down the Rams (4-1, 2-1 LSC) in a football game, with the last win for the Javelinas dating back to 2011. The last time the Javelinas took down the Rams in Kingsville goes back to 2007, when the Javelinas won 47-21.
Saturday's contest will be a good on good matchup in the Lone Star Conference, as the Javelinas' second ranked offense in terms of total yardage will take on the Ram's second ranked defense. Angelo State is also second in the conference in interceptions, with defensive back Xavier Walton leading the conference in INT's with four.
The Javelians' defense has also been very opportunistic this season, sitting just behind the Rams in the team interception rankings with seven. Unlike Angelo, who has one player with four INT's and another with three, the Javelinas have seven different players record an interception thus far with
Eric Barnes and
Julian Payne being added to the list last week.
On the other side of the ball, it will be quite the quarterback matchup between
Jack Turner and reigning LSC player of the year Braeden Fuller. Turner currently sits third in the conference with 1,436 passing yards and nine touchdowns while Fuller has six touchdowns and 440 yards, although Fuller has only appeared in three games.
Despite the heavy focus on the passing attack for the Javelinas, the ground game has been excellent through five weeks as well. Both
Andre Branch and
Edward Chumley sit in the top six in terms of rushing yards per game, with Branch at fourth (291 yards) and Chumley sitting sixth (272 yards).
Kickoff for Saturday's contest is set for 7:00 pm from Javelina Stadium. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game live on FloCollege or follow that game at JavelinaFB on X.
Quick Hitters:
- Texas A&M-Kingsville currently leads the LSC in opponent third down conversion rate, only allowing conversions 27.5 percent of the time,
- Last week's 196 yards against Midwestern State was a season-high for the Javelians
- Tight end
Ivan Thomas scored his first touchdown of the season last week on a 65-yard catch-and-run to get the scoring started for the Javelinas against the Mustangs.
