San Angelo, TX - Texas A&M-Kingsville will face off against Angelo State as it looks to keep pace in the Lone Star Conference championship hunt Saturday from LeGrand Stadium.
The Javelinas suffered their first conference loss of the season after its comeback against reigning LSC champion Central Washington fell short just last week. Now the Javelinas will travel to face a Ram team who has had an underwhelming season after being selected fourth in the LSC preseason poll.
Saturday's contest will be the 55th all-time meeting between the Javelinas and the Rams, with the first matchup dating back to 1968. The Javelinas broke a 12-game losing streak to Angelo State last season and now looks to earn their first win in San Angelo since 2011.
The success the Javelinas have had in conference play can be accredited largely to wide receiver
Christian Kretz, who is having a historical season for Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kretz became the fifth wide receiver in program history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a season and is on pace to shatter the program record for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Kretz currently leads the conference in all those statistical categories as well.
The Javelina defense has been making splash plays when needed this season as well, sitting in a tie for first place in the conference with 21 sacks this season. Texas A&M-Kingsville also ranks first in the LSC with 10 forced fumbles while ranking fourth in interceptions with eight. The linebacker play has been a key point for the Javelinas, with
Travis Bielefeld,
Max Alvarez and
Eric Dadzie jr sitting in the top three on the team in TFL's.
That defense will need to contend with Angelo State quarterback Madox Maher, who earned his first two starts the previous two weeks after the Rams swapped him in for Ayden Arp. Maher has tossed for 421 yards and four touchdowns in his time as the starter, he has however thrown three interceptions all of which came last week against Midwestern State.
Quick Hitters:
- Kretz leads all of DII in receiving yards with 1,068 receiving yards, that mark is also good for second across all divisions of NCAA football as well.
- After
Levi Fontenot's 167 rushing yards against Central Washington last week, Texas A&M-Kingsville became the only team in the LSC with two running backs eclipsing 150 rushing yards in a single game (
Edward Chumley 182 vs West Texas A&M).
-
Mills Dawson is currently second in the LSC with 2,090 yards passing and 16 touchdowns through the air. His passing yards mark is also good for top-ten in DII as well.
- Receiver
Jacoby James earned his first career start last week against Central Washington and was a key contributor in the Javelina offense, finishing the game with five catches for 90 yards.
- The Javelina defense has now racked up at least one sack in 18 consecutive contests, dating back to the 2025 season
-
Taiwo Atunrase has been on a hot streak as of late. Totaling 14 tackles, 2.5 TFL's and a sack over the previous two games.
Kickoff for Saturday's contest against Angelo State is set for 6:00 pm CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the action at JavelinaFB on X.
