TEMPE, Arizona - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional award winners for the 2023-24 season on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior
Alessa Maier received high honors for her performance on the year, receiving the awards for Senior of the Year and Most Improved Player in the South Central Region.
Maier recorded a stellar season, going 30-8 in singles play over the fall and spring, including a 17-3 record in dual matches - all on Court 1. She also racked up a 21-7 doubles record over the year, going 15-4 in the spring with partner
Milou ter Morsche.
Maier was the first Javelina to ever win a regional title, winning the ITA South Central Regional in the fall. She also was the first Javelina to ever compete in the ITA Cup, where she made it to the consolation finals before the match was canceled due to weather delays.
Additionally, Maier set new personal and program bests in national rankings for both singles and doubles play. Maier topped out at No. 6 in the national singles rankings - never dropping outside the top ten - and currently sits at No. 7, where she will likely be named an ITA All-American. The ranking is the highest by a player in program history and an improvement by almost 40 spots over her previous personal best of No. 44, achieved last year. She and ter Morsche also set the new program record for the highest national doubles ranking at No. 15.
Alongside Maier's achievements, the team was given honorable mention honors for the regional ITA Community Service Award with 186 hours of community service by the squad.
The national award winners will be announced next Tuesday, May 21st.
