Denver, Colorado - On a snowy Saturday high in the mountain state, the Kingsville women's and men's cross country teams placed 20th and 23rd respectively at the South-Central NCAA Regional Championships.
It wasn't until the afternoon that the races took places as competition was pushed back to give the previous day and night's snows time to melt and allow for a clearer course. Regardless, it was a little over 40 degrees during the races, which saw the women run a 6k and the men a 10k.
Despite missing a senior
Odette Fernandez, the team's third-best runner, the Kingsville women's team ran a 25:50 average time and put three runners in the top 105. The Javelinas were led by
Maya Espinosa, who placed 55th with a 23:56.1. Finishing within a second of each other in second and third for the Javelinas respectively, were
Ivanova Yanes (106th), who ran 25:28.6, and
Janeth Chacon (107th), who ran a 25:29.3.
Rounding out the five scorers for TAMUK was
Ella Hester, whose 26:38.1 placed her 141st, and
Yaritzy Acosta, who finished in 159th with a 28:40.2. The team scored 550 points, placing them 20th out of 25 teams, with a total time of 2:09.10
The men's team finished 23rd out of 24 competing teams, running a 3:05.22 total time and scoring 682 points.
The freshman
Nirmit Dahiya, competing in just his third collegiate race, led the Javelinas once again, finishing in 116th with a time of 35:52.8. Kingsville's next three runners were all bunched up, finishing within 30 seconds of each other, including Alan Baez and Jose Garcia, who crossed the finish line 1.7 seconds apart. Baez finished in 144th with a 37:32.1 and Garcia ran a 37:33.8 for 145th.Â
TAMUK's fourth finisher, Robert Trevino, placed just a few slots behind his teammates, running a 37:56.5 for 148th place.
