Women's tennis dominates final day of Javelina Jam

The team went seven for eight in singles competition on the day

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The second and final day of the Javelina Jam wrapped up on Saturday with an outstanding performance from the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team.

The Javelinas played eight matches in singles play on the final day of the tournament and found victory in sox, only dropping a two matches. Highlighting the showing from the Javs was three wins over Division I competition from both Prairie View A&M and TAMU-Corpus Chrisiti.

Alessa Maier started the day off for the team with a hard-fought win over opposition from TAMUCC in a 10-6 tiebreaker set to secure third place in her flight.

Raina Zaffar kept things rolling for the Javs with a win over Ayda Guler of Angelo State to take first place in her flight.

A second flight would be won by TAMUK as Ella Hester tacked on a victory against a conference opponent Mieke Van Deventer from Angelo State, 7-5, 6-2.

The fourth victory on the day – against a second Division I school - came from Annika Andersson Gomez who dominated her match to the tune of 6-0, 6-1 over Cierra Garcia of Prairie View. Milou ter Morsche followed suit to give the Javelinas a second victory over the Panthers, finishing the day with four wins from four matches against DI competition.

Rounding out the win column for the Javelinas was Luna Jokanovic, delivering victory over opposition from St. Mary's in a grinded out match in that came down to the wire in a tiebreaker, 10-8.

The only two Javelinas to fall on the day was Isabel Neumer and Manuela Turolo. Neumer would come up just short against her opponent from Angelo State in a three-set battle while Turolo would fall to Ana Veroux of TAMUCC in the finals of her flight, taking second place.

Doubles competition was called off due to inclement weather.

The squad will be back in action next week for the Fall ITA Regionals in Arlington, Texas. The event will take place from Thursday, September 21 through Saturday.
