Denton, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team traveled to Denton, Texas where they took on the Texas Women's Pioneers losing in five sets (22-25, 28-26, 15-25, 25-18, 17-15).
The Javelinas (18-7, 10-3 LSC) came into Saturday on an eight-game streak after getting the better of the Midwestern State Mustangs three sets to one.
The Javelinas came into the match hoping to continue to ride the hot streak they have been on willing their last eight. TAMUK ended the day with a .253 hitting percentage and 13 blocks on the day while the pioneers ended the match hitting .259 with 5 blocks. Junior middle blocker
Ayanna Jackson was dominant in the match having 16 kills hitting a .609 on the day while also having 3.5 blocks to her line.
Set one began with the pioneers rattling off three straight getting out ahead of the Javelinas before the Javelinas eventually battled back tying the set three separate times at 17, 18, and 19 all before the Pioneers went on a 3-0 run making it 22-19. The Javelinas attempted to get a run going but were stopped by the pioneers who took set one 25-22
Set number two saw the most tightly contested set of the match as there were 7 tie scores and five lead changes. With the score 23-19 in the Pioneers favor it looked all but over. The Javelinas, however, were able to muster together a 5-0 run taking the lead 24-23. Each squad took turns putting runs of two together before the set was tied at 26. The Javelinas went on one last 2-0 run taking the set 28-26
The third set was all Pioneers as the Javelinas were able to tie it at 6 all early, but TWU went on a 4-0 run and never relinquished the lead, taking set three 25-15.
The fourth set saw an early battle before the 11-13 point in the set. The Javelinas went on an impressive 5-0 run making the score 16-13. The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback, but to no avail as the Javelinas didn't give up the lead again taking set four 25-18.
The fifth and final set saw the pioneers out front early before the Javelinas battled it back to a 7 all tie. TWU once again went on another 3-0 run putting the set at 10-7, before the Javelinas battled back making it 14 all. The Javelinas one strike away at the 15-14 point before the Pioneers went on a 3-0 run ending the match three sets to two.
