KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field wrapped up the 2022 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, with redshirt senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia) finishing atop the leaderboard in the shot put.
On his fourth attempt, Delancy reached 17.76m (58-3.25) for a new personal best while climbing into 13th nationally. Additionally, the female shot-putters performed well, with sophomore
Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas), classmate
Mackenzie Contreras (Edcouch, Texas), and freshman
Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas) finishing third, fourth and fifth,
Hernandez reached the podium after tossing the implement 14.14m (46-4.75) on her third attempt claiming bronze. Contreras meanwhile measured at 13.74m (45-1), while Williams rounded out the points scorers at 13.40m (43-11.75).
Senior
Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) once again snapped the school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.96m (12-11.75) on her second attempt at the height. She was joined by sophomore
Bianca Cardenas (Elsa, Texas) in the event, who logged a fifth-place finish at 3.56m (11-8).
Also collecting silver, junior
Jordan Wilson (Blytheville, Arkansas) leaped to 7.43m (24-4.25) on his fifth attempt, while freshman
Nana Amo-Mensah (Corpus Christi, Texas) claimed bronze at 7.39m (24-3). R senior
Shammawi Wellington (Portmore, Jamacia) picked up points in the event as well, finishing sixth with a distance of 7.30m (23-11.50).
Snagging a bronze, freshman
Blake Gordon (Yokum, Texas) logged a personal record in the men's pole vault, thanks to a 4.76m (15-7.50) clearance.
On the track, the men's 4x100m relay team started the day with a third-place finish as Wellington was joined by junior
Shaun Gill (Belize City, Belize), sophomore
Bryson Dyer (New Braunfels, Texas), and sophomore
Johnathan Macareno (Kingsville, Texas), with the squad crossing the finish line in 41.83.
Also coming in third, newcomer
Kennedi Silmon (Corpus Christi, Texas) clocked in at 14.11, to reach the podium in her first collegiate conference meet.
Later on, the men's 4x400m relay team comprised of Dyer sophomore
Gabriel Field (China Spring, Texas), classmate
Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas), , and sophomore
Michael Samihamba (Dallas, Texas) placed fourth with a season-best time fo 3:17.46.
Earlier in the day, Riles and Dyer placed back-to-back in the 400m, with Riles in sixth at 49.53, while Dyer took seventh in 50.31. Additionally, Field was the seventh-place finisher in the 110m hurdles after clocking in at 14.93.
Meanwhile, in the women's iteration of the 4x400m relay, freshman
Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas), sophomore
Sophia Ramirez (Edinburg, Texas), newcomer
Lori Martinez (Edinburg, Texas), and freshman
Vitiana Robert (Tarbes, France) also placed fourth, clocking in at 3:53.11.
Christopher also competed individually in the open quarter-mile, taking sixth in 58.11. She also took on the long jump, where the Missouri City native leaped to 5.68m (18-8).
Snagging a point in the 800m, freshman
Cody Fountain (Portland, Texas) placed eighth with a time of 1:57.66. Also scoring on the day, redshirt senior
Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) placed eighth in the javelin after a 48.84m (160-3).
On the team leaderboard, the Javelina men took fifth, managing 88 points, while the women managed fifth after scoring 67.
West Texas A&M were crowned Lone Star Conference Champions in both divisions as their men's team scored 214 and their women 230.
