KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field completed day two of the 2022 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) finishing the decathlon as the league's best, with a new school record mark of 7,401, that also sits second in the nation.
Harper cruised to a personal best of 14.32 in the 110m hurdles kick-starting the day, before vaulting 4.70m (15-5) to cement himself atop the pack. Before climbing atop the podium, he capped off the day with a 4:42.73 time in the 1500m run.
Classmate
Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) joined Harper on the podium, with Wallace claiming bronze with a new personal-best 6,797 that tentatively places him 12th nationally. His best event of the day was the pole vault, where he tacked 760 onto his total thanks to a 4.50m (14-9) clearance. Additionally, Wallace set career bests in the discus throw with a toss of 36.24m (118-11) and in the javelin with a mark of 51.47m (168-10), the best attempt of any decathlete.
Junior
Roel De Leon (Edinburg, Texas) also picked up points in the multi-event, posting a 5,934 score through 10 events.
Five Javelina throwers placed in the women's discus, including senior
Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) and freshman
Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas), finished back-to-back in second and third. Balli unleased a throw of 49.93m (163-9) to get to the podium, while Williams logged the first NCAA provisional mark of her career at 46.29m (151-10).
Also finishing in order, senior
Diana Bustos (Mission, Texas) and sophomore
Mackenzie Contreras (Edcouch, Texas) placed seventh and eighth for 17 total points in the event. Bustos measured at 41.64m (136-7) , while Contreras's best toss was 41.00m (136-7).
In the men's iteration of the event, redshirt senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) placed sixth, reaching 47.26m (155-1) on his second attempt.
Sophomore
Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) finished fifth in the heptathlon, logging a new personal record and climbing into fifth on the all-time Javelina leader board. She provided four points following a solid back half of competitions that was capped off with a 2:30.97 time in the 800m run.
Setting a new personal best and placing fourth, junior
Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) reached 2.05m (6-9.75) on his first attempt. Senior
Tayvion Johnson (Houston, Texas) joined him in the event, claiming sixth at 2.00m (6-6.75).
Meanwhile, the women's high jump saw senior
Criselda Cruz (Alice, Texas) clear a height of 1.55m (5-1) en route to a seventh-place finish.
In the running prelims, freshman
Cody Fountain (Portland, Texas) punched his ticket to the final in the 800m run, after clocking in at 1:56.55.
Fellow newcomer
Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas) advanced in the 400m dash after winning her heat with a time of 57.00. Sophomore
Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas) and classmate
Bryson Dyer (New Braunfels, Texas) will reach the finals in the men's quarter-mile as the pair ran the sixth and seventh fastest preliminary times.
West Texas A&M leads the women's division totaling 88 points, while A&M-Commerce tops the men's side with 64, The Javelina men sit fourth with 35 points, while the women maintain third with 26 heading into the final day of competition.
