Successful first day in Miami for Javelina Track and Field

TAMUK had a number of strong performance in various fielding events

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program polished off their first day of competition at the 2022 Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational on Friday, with the team delivering a handful of solid performances in various field events.
 
Redshirt senior D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia kickstarted the competition in the Sunshine State, placing seventh amongst a talented field in the discus. Delancy reached 45.44m (149-1) on his first attempt, securing his position on the leaderboard.
 
In the open women's discus freshman Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas) slung the implement 41.75m (136-11) on her second try to place ninth between a pair of competitors from Princeton and James Madison. She was joined by sophomore Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) in the competition, who finished 11th at 39.88m (130-10. In the evening portion senior Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) showed out, reaching 48.49m (159-1) for an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark. She placed fifth behind four Power Five competitors.
 
 Hernandez would go on to compete in the hammer throw, where she placed 16th, reaching 40.41m (131-7).
 
Over at the high jump mat, junior Tayvion Johnson (Houston, Texas) placed sixth after clearing a bar set at 1.92m (6-3.50), while classmate Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) finished 10th at 1.92m (6-3.50).
 
Sophomore Reid Barba (San Antonio, Texas) had a strong showing in the pole vault, as he claimed fourth after vaulting 4.67m (15-3.75) to finish behind a trio of athletes from Penn State.
 
Closing out the day, junior Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) and sophomore Bianca Cardenas (Elsa, Texas) took on the women's pole vault, with Ortolon logging a seventh-place finish at 3.62m (11-10.50) and Cardenas in eighth with a 3.32m (10-10.75) clearance.
 
The meet continues on Saturday, with events beginning at 2 p.m. with junior Jordan Wilson (Blytheville, Arkansas) competing in the long jump.
