KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program wrapped up the 14th Annual Cactus Cup on Friday, as a pair of records were broken, and a slew of Blue and Gold athletes reached the podium at Pepsi Field in Javelina Stadium.
The Javelinas took second as a team in both divisions, with the men amassing 209.25 points, while the women earned 187.
Senior
Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) etched her name atop the outdoor school record books, as she tied Sophia Morrow's with a 3.75m (12-4) clearance on her second attempt at the height. Ortolon claimed gold and was joined by sophomore
Bianca Cardenas (Elsa, Texas) in the competition, with Cardenas clearing 3.35m (10-11.75) and finishing third.
Another record was set ablaze as senior
Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas) made Cactus Cup history in the hammer throw. He launched the implement 55.95m (183-07) on his fifth attempt, leapfrogging Canon Andrew of Angelo State and claiming first place.
Earlier, in the women's portion, sophomore
Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) finished second, with a distance of 44.42m (145-09).
Hernandez went on to take silver again in the shot put as she launched the implement 13.40m (43-11.75) on her final toss. Newcomer
Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas) also posted a strong performance in the event, logging a 13.38m (43-10.75) distance on her fifth attempt to place third.
Senior
Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) won the women's discus at 49.57m (162-07) for a new personal best to climb the NCAA Division II performance list into the fifth position. Williams was not far behind as she slung the implement 45.89m (150-07) to take second for consecutive podium performances.
Capping off a successful day for the throwers, redshirt senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) earned a Cactus Cup championship in the shot put, with a 17.52m (57-05.75) throw on his fifth try. Delancy also competed in the discus and placed third at 47.16m (154-09).
The men's high jump featured junior
Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) and senior
Tayvion Johnson (Houston, Texas) at the top of the leader board, with Richardson in first with a 2.00m (6-06.75) mark and Johnson second with a 1.95m (6-04.75) clearance.
In the women's long jump, freshman
Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas) and sophomore
Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) finished back-to-back in second and third, with Christopher reaching 5.55m (18-02.50) and Shows at 5.53m (18-01.75). Christopher found success in the 100m dash as well, where she earned silver in 12.28.
Senior
Jordan Wilson (Blytheville, Arkansas) led a men's long jump that featured a trio of Javelinas on the podium, with Wilson reaching 7.09m (23-03.25) for gold, while redshirt senior
Shammawi Wellington (Portmore, Jamaica) took second in 6.94m (22-0.925) and classmate
Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) earned third with a distance of 6.88m (22-07.0).
Shows found success in the triple jump as well, reaching 11.15m (36-07) on her final attempt to climb into the top spot.
Redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) clocked in at 14.22 en route to a 110m hurdle championship. He was joined by sophomore
Gabriel Field (China Spring, Texas), who took third in the event at 14.47. The women's iteration saw freshman
Kennedi Silmon (Corpus Christi, Texas) claim silver with a time of 14.22.
Harper also tasted victory in the 4x100m relay, when he combined with Wellington, junior
Shaun Gill (Belize City, Belize), and sophomore
Jonathan Macareno (Kingsville, Texas), to finish the sprint relay in 40.99.
Individually Gill dominated the open 100m snagging a first-place finish in 10.57, and claimed third in the 200m with a time of 22.51.
The Lorena native still wasn't finished as he earned a three-way tie for second in the pole vault with Wallace and freshman
Blake Gordon (Yokum, Texas), all clearing a bar set at 4.65m (15-03.00).
Harper also featured in the 4x400m relay as he joined sophomore
Bryson Dyer (New Braunfels, Texas), classmate
Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas), and sophomore
Michael Samihamba (Dallas, Texas) in a second-place finish at 3:17.46.
The women's relay saw Christopher, sophomore
Sophia Ramirez (Edinburg, Texas), freshman
Lori Martinez, and freshman
Vitiana Robert (Tarbes, France) earn silver for their time of 3:53.30. Individually, Ramirez placed third in the 200m dash, clocking in at 26.19.
Riles won the 400m dash with a time of 49.26, beating out a pair of Angelo State athletes for the top spot.
Rounding things out, freshman
Trevor Haynes (Shiner, Texas) reached 13.78m (45-02.50) in the triple jump for a third-place finish.
Angelo State was crowned meet champions on both sides, with their men's team earning 243.50 and their women's 290, while UTRGV placed third in both divisions.
