Wallace fourth, Shows 12th following day one at Dave Noble Relays

Dean Wallace holds a day one score of 3,263 in the decathlon, while Shows has scored 2,465 in the heptathlon

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program completed the first day of competition at the Dave Noble Relays at LeGrande Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, on Thursday, as the Javelinas had three student-athletes taking on the decathlon, with sophomore Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) in the heptathlon. 
 
Shows sits 12th in the women's heptathlon with a day one score of 2,465. She picked up 701 points in the day's first event, as she clocked in at 16.11 in the 100m hurdles. From there, she placed eighth in the high jump, clearing a bar of 1.51m (4-11.50) on her first attempt. Later in the shot put, she reached 8.80m (28-10.50) for 451 points, before closing the day out with a 14th place finish in the 200m at 27.38, tacking 681 to her total score. 
 
A trio of Blue and Gold competitors took on the decathlon, with redshirt senior Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) pacing the team in fourth with a score of 3,263. Meanwhile, freshman Nathan Melton (Lorena, Texas) is fifth at 3,259 and sophomore Roel De Leon (Edinburg, Texas) sixth with 3,148 points. 
 
Wallace and Melton started the day tied, after the pair crossed the finish line simultaneously in the 100m at 11.42, snagging 769 points apiece. 
 
Next, Wallace claimed the top spot in the long jump leaping to 6.79m (22-3.50) on his third and final attempt for 764 points. De Leon and Melton finished back-to-back in the event, with De Leon in fifth at 6.16m (20-2.50) and Melton in sixth at 5.93m (19-5.50).
 
In the shot put, Melton finished atop the field with a toss of 13.64m (44-9) to add 706 to his total. Wallace, meanwhile, placed fourth, reaching 11.71m (38-5) for 589.  
 
De Leon's best event of the day came in the high jump, where he cleared a bar of 1.80m (5-10.25) to tie for second and gain 627 points. Wallace scored 577 thanks to a successful attempt at 1.74m (5-8.50), with Melton sixth at 1.65m (5-5).
 
Finally, Melton and De Leon finished in order in the 400m dash, with the Lorena, Texas native taking third with a time of 52.37, adding 709, while De Leon clocked in at 52.80 690 to wrap up day one.
 
The combined events wrap up on Friday with the decathletes taking on the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m, while Shows takes on the long jump, javelin, and 800m.
