ABILENE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program completed their first day of competition at the Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium, with redshirt senior D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia) taking third in the men's shot put, while sophomore Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) managed a sixth-place finish in the women's
Delancy launched the implement 16.70m (54-09.50) on his third attempt to claim bronze amongst a slew of NCAA Division I athletes. Joining him in the men's competition was sophomore Felix Hernandez (Edinburg, Texas) and freshman Jessie Contreras (Elsa, Texas) as the pair finished back-to-back in 12th and 13th, F. Hernandez reached 13.98m (45-10.50) with Contreras at 13.96m (44-09.75).
Later, in the women's contest, K. Hernandez took sixth at 13.66m (44-09.75) with senior Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) not far behind in 10th at12.96m (39-03.25), while sophomore Andrea Jimenez (San Diego, Texas) right behind her with a throw of 11.58m (38-00)in 11th.Â
In the hammer throw, K. Hernandez had another strong performance, as the second-year Javelina heaved the hammer 42.79m (140-04) on her third toss to earn eighth. Meanwhile, in the men's hammer throw, senior Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas) paced the Javelinas with a seventh-place finish at 52.95m (173-08).
The meet concludes tomorrow with the javelin kicking off the festivities at 9:30 a.m. before track events begin at 2:05 p.m.
