Javs earn a trio of bronzes on day one at Indoor Championships

Johnathan Harper, Dean Wallace, and Kimberly Ortolon all finished third on day one of the conference meet

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2022 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, with redshirt seniors Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) and Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) taking third in the men's pole vault, while junior Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) earned bronze in the women's division.
 
Harper and Wallace earned a share of the podium after the pair cleared 4.59m (15-0.75) on their first attempt, while freshman Blake Gordon (Yokum, Texas) took sixth on his third attempt at the bar. Sophomore Anthony Ramon (Mission, Texas) picked up a point in the vault as well, with a mark of 4.29m (14-0.75). 
 
In the women's iteration of the event, Ortolon propelled her way to third-place, reaching 3.70m (12-1.50) on her first attempt, with sophomore Bianca Cardenas (Elsa, Texas) taking fifth, at 3.40m (11-1.25). 
 
Harper picked up three more points in the long jump, finishing sixth, with a leap of 7.00m (22-11.75), with redshirt senior Shammawi Wellington (Portmore, Jamaica) not far behind in seventh at 6.96m (22-10),
 
In the high jump, junior Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) claimed fourth place, matching his personal best at 2.00m (6-6.75) on his first attempt at the height. 
 
Meanwhile, in the throwing ring, senior Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas) and classmate D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) finished in fifth and seventh, with Cardenas reaching 16.89m (55-5), while Delancy heaved the implement 15.66m (51-4.50).
 
Senior Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) wrapped up the day, taking sixth in the women's weight throw, with a toss of 1525 m (50-0.25). 
 
In the team standings, the men currently sit fourth, with 31 points, while the women maintain seventh, scoring 14. 
 
The meet concludes Saturday with festivities kicking off at10:30 a.m. in the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.
