TAMUK performed well on the track, besting several NCAA Division I programs

HOUSTON — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program competed at the 2022 Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday, with the throwing crew delivering several dominant performances. 
 
Redshirt senior D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) recorded his second gold medal in as many events as the Jamaican logged a 17.07m (56-00) toss in the shot put on his fourth attempt. Additionally, junior Marco Arevalo (Falfurrias, Texas) claimed bronze in the contest reaching 16.26m (53-04.25). 
 
Delancy's success continued in the weight throw as he launched the implement 14.95m (49-00.75) to take fifth. Senior Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas) paced the Javelinas in the event heaving the weight 17.45m (57-0.3). 
 
For the women, sophomore Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) finished sixth in the shot put reaching 13.31m (43-08) on her third attempt, while senior Gertrudis Balli (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico) earned sixth at 14.74m (48-04.50) in the weight throw.
 
Junior Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) finished atop the leaderboard in the pole vault, clearing a bar of 3.85m (12-07.50), cruising to a first-place finish in front of a pair of Tulane vaulters. 
 
Wrapping up the field events, junior Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) finished third in the high jump at 1.95m (1.95m (6-04.75) behind a pair of NCAA Division I athletes. 
 
The men's 4x400m relay squad comprised of sophomore Bryson Dyer (New Braunfels, Texas), redshirt senior Joseph Swierc (Falls City, Texas), sophomore Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas), and sophomore Michael Samihamba (Dallas, Texas) garnered gold, clocking in at 3:19.07.
 
Freshman Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas) continued her stellar first year, placing second in the 400m dash at 58.08, while classmate Kennedi Silmon (Corpus Christi, Texas) placed seventh in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.09.
