TOPEKA, Texas. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program concluded day two at the Washburn Open on Saturday in the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility, with redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) and senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia) both turning in first-place performances.
Harper was crowned champion of the heptathlon winning his second event on as many occasions, this time scoring 5,282 across seven events with notable second-day performances including an 8.32 mark in the 60m hurdles, and clearing a 4.70m (15-05) bar in the pole vault.
Delancy, meanwhile, won the shot-put with a meet record toss of 17.21m (56-05.75) on his fifth attempt marking the 12th-best effort in the nation and the greatest toss of his collegiate career. The Jamaican bettered the previous standard of 16.73m by nearly half a meter en route to the victory.
Additionally, sophomore
Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) rewrote the Javelina record books for the second time this season, improving her mark in the pentathlon by 41 points. She scored 3,042 in Topeka, earning her fourth place with top events including the 60m hurdles, where she clocked in at 9.86, and the 800m run that saw her take fourth in 2:31.42.
Junior
Shaun Gill (Belize City, Belize) ran his third NCAA provisional qualifying time of the season in the 60m dash, as he placed fourth in 6.86.
In the women's shot put, sophomore
Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) heaved the implement 13.52m (44-04.25) to take second, finishing just behind professional thrower Dani Winters who was competing unattached.
Junior
Dustin Richardson (Natalia, Texas) competed in the high jump and represented the Blue and Gold well, placing fifth while clearing a bar of 2.00m (6-06.75).
The women's 4x400m relay team comprised of freshman
Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas), freshman
Lidia Lowe (Corpus Christi, Texas), freshman
Kennedi Silmon (Corpus Christi, Texas), and sophomore
Sophia Ramirez (Edinburg, Texas), took third place with a time of 4:01.30 that placed them just behind Fort Hayes State and Harding University,.
Cristopher also performed well individually, placing eighth in the open 400m competition at 57.68 and in the long jump, where she leaped to 5.33m (17-06).
The Javelinas next compete at the FasTrak Collegiate Open Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston.
