HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program competed at the Fastrak Collegiate Challenge on Friday in the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of Houston, as the Javelinas had standout performers in a slew of events on Saturday,
The highlight of the day came in the men's 4x400m relay as the Blue and Gold squad comprised of redshirt freshman
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas), sophomores
Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas),
Michael Samihamba (Dallas, Texas), and
Bryson Dyer (New Braunfels, Texas) finished atop a stacked field that featured several NCAA Divisions 1 programs with a time of 3:24.62.
Freshman
Cody Fountain (Portland, Texas) performed well in a pair of middle-distance events as he claimed third with a time of 1:57.68 in the 800m, behind a pair of athletes from Louisiana, before placing eighth in the mile at 4:29.10.
Additionally, Olympian
Shaun Gill (Belize City, Belize) continued his stellar junior campaign taking third in the 60m behind two Sun Belt student-athletes.
The Javelina throwers represented TAMUK well in Houston, with senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamacia) recording an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 16.81m (55-2) that slots him 18th nationally and earned him a silver medal.
In the women's iteration, sophomore
Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) heaved the impliment13.35m (43-1.75) to take seventh as the only DII participant in the top-17.
Junior
Kimberly Ortolon (Edna, Texas) secured second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.70m (12-1.50) for a new season-best. That vault moves her into second on the Lone Star Conference leaderboard, while placing her 29th nationally.
Back on the track, the women's 4x400 meter relay team clocked in at 4:01.89 with freshman
Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas), freshman
Lori Martinez (Edinburg, Texas), freshman
Lidia Lowe (Corpus Christi, Texas), and sophomore
Sophia Ramirez (Edinburg, Texas) placing second behind Stephen F. Austin as the only DII member in the event.
Independently, Christopher competed in the 200m, placing sixth at 25.84.
Freshman
Odette Fernandez (Grulla, Texas) paced the field in the 3000m as she claimed second with a time of 11:10.58, finishing less than two seconds behind Vianney Sanchez of Tarleton State.
The Javelinas now make the trek to Topeka, Kan. On Friday, Jan. 28, for day one of the Washburn Open at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
