RICHARDSON, Texas. – The Lone Star Conference recognized a trio of Texas A&M-Kingsville student-athletes for their performance in the Boo Rogers Invitational this past weekend with redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) claiming Men's Field Athlete of the Week, junior
Shaun Gill (Belize City, Belize) winning Men's Track Athlete of the Week and sophomore
Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) earning Women's Field Athlete of the Week in a release on Tuesday.
Harper last received the weekly accolade in 2020 after setting the facility record with a mark of 5,561 at the Bearcat Open, a score that remains his personal best in the heptathlon as well as the second-best in school history. This week, he claimed it thanks to a nation-leading benchmark of 5,451 that allowed him to claim the heptathlon title in the Boo Rogers Invitational for the third consecutive year.
At the Robert W. Plaster Center, the Lorena, Texas native scored 800+ points in three of seven events, winning both the pole vault and 60m hurdles portion of the combined event competition while placing second in the 60m dash. Additionally, his hurdle time of 8.13 stands meets the NCAA provisional standard and ranks him ninth on the national performance list.
Gill received his honor after competing in his first competition since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he clocked in at 6.84 in the 60m dash allowing him to finish tenth overall, fourth excluding professionals competing unattached in Pittsburg, Kan. His time earned him a provisional mark that places him ninth on the national leaderboard. The last time the Javelinas claimed the men's track accolade was on Feb. 14, 2019, when
Ayman Zahafi recorded a provisional time of 1:51.69 in the 800m at the Fourth Annual Gorilla Classic.
The 2019 season also served as the last time the Blue and Gold had a female field athlete receive recognition when Racheal Somoye shattered a trio of records in the Crimson and Gold Invitational with a distance of 19.32m (63-4.75) in the weight throw breaking the meet record, conference record and Javelina program record in the event.
In 2021 however, Show's snapped the TAMUK record in the pentathlon en route to her league honor as the San Antonio native snagged 3,001 points off three events bettering the previous school record she set at last year's league meet by 58 points. Her best events included the 60m hurdles, where she clocked in at 9.99 and earned 714 points, and the 800m run that saw her finish with a time of 2:34.62 and gain 636 points cementing the new record.
After a brief intermission, the Javelinas return to the track on Jan. 14, as they make the trek to College Station, Texas for the Ted Nelson Invitational.
