KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team will hit the road this weekend for their lone tournament in a shortened fall schedule starting on October 16 in San Angelo, Texas. The Javelinas will compete in the invitational that features all but two Lone Star Conference programs as Angelo State hosts the meetup at the ASU Tennis Courts.
TAMUK will be joined by ASU along with DBU, Western New Mexico, UAFS, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler and Cameron, as St. Mary's and Midwestern State opted not to travel to the event and St. Edward's recently dropped the women's tennis program in a decision back in April 2020.
The Javelinas travel three returners and three newcomers to the meet, with senior
Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas), junior
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) leading the way. Joining the trio are freshmen
Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany),
Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany) and
Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands).
The Blue and Gold had their Spring 2020 season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic as the team held a 5-2 record coming off three consecutive 7-0 shutouts of CSU Pueblo, Northwood and Quincy ahead of the San Antonio Intercollegiate Championships. The program had reached the LSC Tournament in each of the five years head coach
Autumn Wollenzien has guided the program, including three straight LSC Semifinal appearances featuring a hard-fought 4-1 loss to No. 14 Midwestern State during the 2019 bracket.
This weekend's invitational will serve as the precursor to the 2021 spring schedule, which will be announced at a later date. Competition at ASU will take place over the course of the day with brackets at the following link:
