Hogs host Texans for Homecoming

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT for 50th Reunion of 1969 NAIA Championship team presented by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg

The Matchup    
  • The Javelinas return home this week to take on No. 4/5 Tarleton in Lone Star Conference action
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium
  • The game is part of Homecoming at TAMUK and will also be the 50th Reunion of the 1969 NAIA Championship football team presented by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg
  • The Texans won the 2018 meeting in Stephenville, Texas, by a score of 59-21
  • Koy Detmer Jr. threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the loss
  • Tyler Wilson caught 10 passes for 95 yards and a score to lead the receiving corps
  • TSU has won the two most recent meetings between the programs
  • The Hogs last defeated the Texans at home 34-20 on Oct. 3, 2009

Scouting the Texans    
  • Tarleton recently announced its transition to NCAA Division I earlier in the month and is a perfect 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the LSC on the year
  • TSU won its first game of the year, 37-26, over D1 foe Stephen F. Austin
  • The Texans have allowed more than 20 points from their opponents only thrice in 2019, with a season-high of 28 points allowed from West Texas A&M on September 21
  • Daniel McCants leads the ground game with 768 yards on 107 rushes for seven scores
  • Khalil Banks owns nine touchdowns and 539 yards on 91 attempts
  • Ben Holmes manages the passing game with 1801 yards on a 62.1 completion percentage and 19 touchdowns
  • Zimari Manning is Holmes' favorite target, with 42 catches for 798 yards and 12 scores
  • J.F. Thomas is the clear-cut No. 2 on the receiving corps with 550 yards and four touchdowns on 25 catches
  • B.J. Jefferson leads the defense with 61 tackles, 15.5 for loss, and six sacks
  • Benjie Franklin anchors the secondary with three interceptions and 25 tackles, 20 solo

Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas fell behind early to Midwestern State and never recovered en route to a 70-35 loss
  • The Mustangs scored the first four touchdowns of the game before TAMUK responded with a 28-yard rushing score from Devin Milburn midway through the second quarter
  • Ryan Martinez added a 10-yard rushing touchdown near the end of the half but the Hogs faced a 35-14 deficit at the break
  • Kason Franklin fell on the loose ball early in the third for the first defensive score of 2019
  • Kris Barnes added a 20-yard touchdown while Luis Lopez capped the scoring for TAMUK with a two-yard rushing score in the fourth
  • Barnes had a career-high 130 yards on 13 attempts as the Hogs ran for 237 yards as a team
  • Walker Ring led the receiving corps with four catches for 64 yards as a true freshman
  • Amos Coleman III and Tre'Michael Tutt led the defense with eight tackles apiece

Defensive Stalwart    
  • Tre'Michael Tutt's 22 tackles (12 solo) against ENMU on Sept. 28 set a new program record for most tackles in a game
  • Tutt broke the record of 21 originally set by Robert Soza against Nevada on Sept. 15, 1984, and matched by Chris Hensley against Pittsburg State on Dec. 2, 1995

Gone in a Flash    
  • Donte Ross' 48-yard punt return touchdown against ENMU on Sept. 28 was the first punt return touchdown by a Javelina in nearly 10 years
  • The last Hog to return a punt for a score was Corey Robertson on Oct. 31, 2009, against Abilene Christian
  • The last TAMUK special teams touchdown was a 100-yard kickoff return by Jordan Thomas against William Jewell on Nov. 8, 2017
  • Josh Wilson added the second special teams touchdown of the year with a 70-yard return following a blocked field goal against Western Oregon on Oct. 12

Goose Egg    
  • TAMUK's 72-0 win over Sul Ross State was the first shutout for head coach Daren Wilkinson since he first took over the program ahead of the 2015 season
  • The last shutout came in the 2010 season, a 21-0 win over A&M-Commerce on Sept. 8
  • It was the 126th shutout in program history and the 10th of Sul Ross State

Lone Star Conference in the National Rankings    
  • The LSC continues to have three teams ranked in the AFCA poll and D2Football.com rankings
  • Tarleton remained steady at the No.4/5 spot following a 35-21 win over A&M-Commerce
  • The Lions fell into a tie for the 23rd spot in the AFCA poll and the 24th spot in the D2Football.com rankings as a result of the loss to the Texans
  • Angelo State moved up to the No. 21/19 spot with a 17-14 win over West Texas A&M
  • The Buffs are no longer receiving votes after the loss to the Rams
  • Eastern New Mexico continues to receive votes following a 48-17 win over Western New Mexico

Go Big or Go Home    
  • The Javelinas have 46 plays over 20 yards, including three of at least 70 yards
  • Lopez's 70-yard touchdown run, along with a 79-yard kick return from Amos Coleman III, both came against Sul Ross State on Sept. 14
  • Josh Wilson added a 70-yard blocked field goal return against Western Oregon on Oct. 12
  • A 48-yard punt return touchdown by Donte Ross, a 43-yard pass completion from Cade Dyal to Darrian Hambrick, both against ENMU, and a 40-yard rush from Kris Barnes against MSU Texas are the other plays that went beyond 40 yards

Driving Range    
  • TAMUK has posted 24 scoring drives so far in 2019, including three drives that lasted under a minute and two which resulted in field goals
  • Two drives that were under 60 seconds ended on a rushing touchdown courtesy of Luis Lopez, while the other ended in a pass from Cade Dyal to Amonte Bowen
  • The Hogs have had seven scoring drives longer than four minutes, all lasting at least seven plays, three of which ended on a passing touchdown, another three that ended on a rushing touchdown and the last which resulted in a 24-yard field goal by Romario Perez
  • Five scoring drives lasted at least 10 plays
  • The longest scoring drive took 5:57 off the clock, lasting for 11 plays and 86 yards, and was capped off by a two-yard rushing score from Luis Lopez against Midwestern State
