Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – Anna Demmer and Lexie Johnston combined for 27 kills against just two errors and led the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions to a 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 sweep over the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
This loss, combined with a win by St. Edward's over Tarleton, puts the Javelinas in a tie for first place in their division, where their record still stands at 5-1, with a 7-3 mark in the conference and an overall record of 16-8. SEU does own a head-to-head advantage over TAMUK. UAFS is 9-1 in the LSC and 16-5 overall.
Sophomore Jordan Wonders (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted her team's highest kill total with nine and also finished with a .222 hitting percentage. Junior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) nearly picked up a double-double, as she came away with eight kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore Lauren Kadilis (Spring Branch, Texas) tossed out 23 assists to lead her team in that statistic and three Javelinas hit double-digits in digs. Second-year player Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) had a team-high 11, while Morris and freshman Jordan Schenkel (San Antonio, Texas) were credited with 10.
The Javelinas quickly found themselves in a 5-1 hole in the opening set but battled back to tie twice, first at 10, and again at 13. From there, the Lions won seven of the next nine points to move out to their largest led of the frame, 20-15, but the Javelinas came back to even things again. With a 7-2 run of their own, the Blue and Gold fought to even things at 23, only for a smash by Johnston and a Javelina attack error to secure the set for UAFS.
The Javelinas wasted no time putting themselves in a position to even the match. They notched five of the first six points in the second and continued to lead with the score at 14-9 following an attack error by the Lions. That's when the momentum swung to the visitors. UAFS tallied 12 of the next 14 points to transform their five-point deficit into the a five-point, 21-16, advantage. The Lions continued riding that momentum to a 2-0 lead, finished off thanks to an Demmer kill.
UAFS did not lose the initiative in the third set, quickly building an 8-3 lead, but the Javelinas had a response. Scores from senior Talleyshia Morris (Tulsa, Okla.) and Roxanne Morris pulled the home team with one at 10-9, only for an 8-2 run to put the visitors back ahead by seven. The closest the Javs could get after that was within four points before Courtney Crownover iced the match with an ace.
