Hogs face Angelo State in LSC play

Kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT at LeGrand Stadium

The Matchup    
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville willl travel to San Angelo, Texas, this weekend to take on their second Ram opponents in as many weeks
  • This will be the home / LSC opener for Angelo State and second-straight road LSC game for the Hogs
  • Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT
  • The contest will stream on the AngeloSports.com website
  • KTAI 91.1 will also carry the game with Mark Inserra on the call
  • This will be the 52nd meeting all-time between the programs with TAMUK holding a comfortable series lead at 33-18 despite ASU winning the previous five games.
  • The Javelinas dropped the 2017 contest, 40-14, despite two touchdowns from Cade Dyal and 104 rushing yards from Jeff Carr

Scouting the Rams (again)    
  • Angelo State opened the season with a 24-17 win on the road against Western Oregon before dropping a 41-24 contest to Abilene Christian
  • 2018 Preseason LSC Defensive Player of the Year Markus Jones is second on the team with 17 tackles but leads the way with 7.5 for loss along with three sacks and four hurries
  • Grant Aschenbeck leads the defense with 23 total tackles
  • Tyrese Nathan leads the ground game with 223 yards on 5.2 per carry to go with one touchdown
  • Charlie Rotherham has thrown for 357 yards in two contests for ASU, connecting for three touchdowns but getting picked off twice
  • Payne Sullins has also seen action under center, throwing for 104 yards and two interceptions
  • Lawson Ayo has caught two touchdown passes for the Rams on the heels of 90 yards, while Keke Chism leads the team with 151 receiving yards to go with his lone score
  • Connor Flanigan has connected on two of his five field goal attempts on the year

Last Time Out    
  • The Javelinas bested Texas Wesleyan in the 2018 home opener at newly minted Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium with a 52-10 win over the Rams
  • The Blue and Gold backfield accounted for 333 yards and five combined touchdowns to pave the way for the win
  • Nick Pelrean was the spearhead for the Hog ground game as he totaled 111 yards on 12 carries to go with two touchdowns
  • Carr added 93 yards on eight carries and a score, and also caught two passes for 42 yards
  • Newcomer Jeff Oglesby added 89 yards on 15 carries, while Luis Lopez rumbled his way to two scores on 40 yards
  • Aaron Dilworth caught the lone touchdown pass, a 22-yard reception from transfer Koy Detmer Jr.
  • Detmer Jr. ended the game with 169 yards on 12-for-22 attempts and one interception
  • Caleb Valentine led the defensive effort with nine tackles, 4.5 for loss, while Dynamite-Jones Fa'agata had a 49-yard inteception return for a touchdown
  • The Javelinas held the Rams to 65 total yards of offense, including a total of seven on the ground
  • Devonte Williams and Nick Stiff were the other two Hog defenders with a takeaway in the game as each had one interception

  • The Javelinas hovered in the AFCA Rankings this week, currently receiving votes for the second week in a row
  • A&M-Commerce remains the No. 1 ranked team in the poll while MSU Texas moved up to No. 7 following a 38-17 win over then-No. 2 West Florida the previous week
  • Tarleton is the other LSC school in the poll, currently receiving votes

Home Openers under Wilkinson    
  • The Hogs are 3-1 under head coach Daren Wilkinson in home openers following the win over TWU
  • TAMUK defeated Missouri S&T in 2015, 38-20, courtesy of 116 yards and two touchdowns from running back Shawn Vasquez
  • The Blue and Gold bested Simon Fraser, 68-7, in 2016 on the heels of a four-touchdown game from Myles Carr
  • The lone loss came in 2017 to Central Washington at 34-10

(Way Too) Early Season Trends    
  • The Hogs are currrently ninth in the nation with four interceptions in 2018, and are also sixth in in rushing defense at 50.5 yards/game
  • The Javelina offense is currently ranked 11th in the nation at 44 points/game
  • The defensive look also includes six takeaways and an average of 230.5 yards allowed/game, both 15th in the NCAA Division II

Four Score and Seven Games To Go    
  • The Javelinas will play seven home games in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons
  • TAMUK will face Texas Wesleyan, Eastern New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, Western Oregon, No. 10 MSU Texas, Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin in 2018
  • The Hogs will play four straight at home starting on September 22 against ENMU and ending on October 13 against MSU Texas
  • 2019 home opponents include Saginaw Valley State, Sul Ross State, Angelo State, A&M-Commerce, Western Oregon, Tarleton and West Texas A&M

Hogs On Top    
  • The Javelinas have all-time winning records against six of their nine remaining opponents
  • TAMUK will have a chance to go ahead in the series against WTAMU as the overall record is tied 14-14-1
  • The Hogs own winning records against five of the seven remaining LSC opponents
  • The combined all-time record for TAMUK against the seven remaining LSC opponents is 90-65-1

Showcase Showdown    
  • This is the second year in a row where the Hogs have been featured on the NCAA Division-II Showcase
  • TAMUK and Tarleton faced off in Kingsville in 2017 on ESPN3 as the Texans took away a 41-34 decision

The Professional Connection    
  • Assistant coaches Scott Brown and Eddie Moten have had football careers that went beyond the college gridiron
  • Brown coaches in Division-I up until 2012 when he became the scout for the San Francisco 49ers and eventually the defensive line coach
  • Moten had a successful career in the Arena Football League for the Philadelphia Soul, winning the 2008 ArenaBowl XXII
