Brown joined the TAMUK football program for the 2018 season as the defensive line coach.
Brown brings over 44 years of coaching experience ranging from the NCAA Division-I and -II levels to the NFL.
Most recently, Brown retired from coaching in 2016 after spending the previous three years as a member of the San Francisco 49ers staff. Brown coached the defensive line following a two-year stint as a scout for the 49ers.
Prior to his time at San Francisco, Brown spent the better part of four decades coaching around the nation at various Division-I and -II programs. He spent the 2011-12 season as the defensive line coach at Arizona State after wrapping up a two-year stint at Colorado State from 2008 to 2010 where he worked with head coach Daren Wilkinson and assistant coach Phil Serchia on the Ram coaching staff.
While at CSU, Brown tutored Guy Miller, who became the first Ram player in years to earn first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors. Miller established a school and MWC single-game record with 4.5 sacks against UNLV in 2010.
Before his time in Fort Collins, Colo., Brown was the defensive line coach for Duke from 1996 to 2007 after spending the 1992-95 seasons at Minnesota. With the Golden Gophers, he coached Craig Sauer, the Atlanta Falcons’ sixth-round selection in the 1996 NFL Draft, as well as Miami Dolphins free agent Ed Hawthorne.
Prior to Minnesota, Brown served at TCU from 1983 to 1991 as the defensive line coach. While at TCU, he was instrumental in the development of the late Fred Washington, the Chicago Bears’ second-round choice in the 1990 NFL Draft, and Kent Tramel, a Horned Frog free agent signed by the Washington Redskins in the late 1980s.
Brown also coached the defensive line at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) from 1980-82 and helped the Bobcats to consecutive Division-II national championships with victories over North Dakota State in 1981 and UC Davis in 1982.
Brown began his coaching career at Central Catholic (Colo.) High School in 1974-75 and began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Adams State, in 1976 as a graduate assistant and as a linebackers coach from 1977-79.
Throughout his coaching career, Brown worked extensively with various former Javelina coaches, including College Football Hall of Famer Ron Harms, who was the head coach at Texas A&I/Texas A&M-Kingsville from 1979-99 and led the Hogs to the 1979 NAIA Championship. Harms was the head coach at Adams State from 1970-73 and was the 12th head coach in program history while Brown was a student-athlete.
While playing for Adams State, Brown was teammates with also former Javelina assistant coaches Jim Dawson, Dan Hurley and Don Pittman
Brown graduated from Adams State in 1974 following a four-year career as a linebacker and defensive end. He prepped at Del Norte (Colo.) High School and was an All-American before committing to Adams State.
Brown and his wife, Pamela, have been married 46 years and have two children, Ryan and Meghan. Ryan is married to Lindsey and they have two children, Collin and Dawson, and Meghan played volleyball at Duke from 2000-03.
