Javelinas Head to New Mexico

Texas A&M-Kingsville opens their five-game road trip in New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. – In this league, there is no institution that equals an easy win. Especially when playing on the road. However, after playing multiple ranked teams back-to-back, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-8, 2-5 LSC) looks to have a lighter weekend as they travel to New Mexico and face Eastern New Mexico University (7-9, 2-5 LSC) on Thursday, January 18 (1 p.m. CT) and then Western New Mexico University (3-13, 0-7 LSC) on Saturday, January 20 (5 p.m. CT).

The Javelinas are ready to put this seven-game losing streak to bed and pick up their first wins of 2018. They are 3-3 this season in road games and are tied for eighth place in the Lone Star Conference with the Greyhounds – their first opponent of the weekend. Though they sit towards the top of the conference in scoring defense (67.9 ppg), turnovers forced (281), and blocked shots (73), it has been a struggle offensively, averaging just 69.3 points per contest. Trey Sumpter is the team's leading scorer (11.5 ppg) followed by a supporting cast beginning with Caelan Neal (8.1 ppg), Jacolby Harris (7.6), Cris Boleware (7.4), Derrick Byrd (7.2), and Will West (6.9 ppg). Robert Stevenson continues to be the anchor defensively with 29 blocks to go along with his 6.2 ppg.

The Greyhounds are coming off of a tight 89-87 overtime loss to Midwestern State that snapped their three-game winning streak. They will now return to Greyhound Arena where they have not played their best basketball this season, posting a 1-3 record. Matching the Hogs 2-5 conference record, the Hounds have picked up LSC wins against Western New Mexico (105-91) and Cameron (70-67). Eastern has three student-athletes who average double-digits in scoring. Lamarquis Thompson scores 11.5 ppg and leads the team with 5.7 rebounds per game, Zach Parker adds 10.9 ppg and leads the club with 17 steals, and Jamani Pierce also drops ten a game and has a team-best 11 blocks this year.

The Western New Mexico Mustangs has had a hard time this season and are still looking for their first conference win. They are currently on a three-game skid and will face Angelo State on Thursday before Kingsville enters Drag's Court on Saturday. The Mustangs score 70.8 points on average and their –11.7 scoring margin is the worse in the conference. Willie McCray finds himself all over the court, scoring a team-best 13.4 ppg and has logged 22 assists and 21 steals this season. Haneef Vaughn-Wilson is behind him with 9.6 ppg but leads the team with 41 assists and 25 steals, while Latrell Spivey also averages nine points and has team-highs of 6.5 rebounds per game and eight blocks.
