No. 23 Hogs Look to get Back on Track Versus the Aggies

Texas A&M-Kingsville will go to war with Cameron on Military Appreciation Night

KINGSVILLE, Texas – A four-game homestand begins for No. 23 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-1, 1-0 LSC), starting with a Lone Star Conference showdown with Cameron University (4-4, 1-1 LSC) on Thursday, December 7 on the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

Both teams' matchup well on paper, setting the stage for another exciting 40 minutes at the SPEC. The Javelinas lead the LSC in scoring defense (64.6 PPG) which also ranks 19th in Division II. They also defend the three-point line tightly as they hold the third-lowest three-point defense field goal percentage at 32.7. However, on the other side of the court will be an Aggie club who shoots 38.2 percent from three and averages 9.1 made three-pointers per game – both categories rank second in the league. What could potentially be the determining factor in the game is who controls the boards. TAMUK currently has a –0.4 rebound margin against their opponents, but CU is dead last in the conference with 32.6 rebounds per game.

The Hogs are coming off of their first loss of the season at the hands of St. Edwards 89-72. Trey Sumpter leads the team with 12 points per game and ties Christian Bambrook with a team-high of 4.3 rebounds per game. Sumpter serves as the biggest threat from behind-the-arc, shooting 41.2 percent from deep and has made 21 threes this season which is the third most in the LSC. Jacolby Harris is next with 10.4 points followed by Caelan Neal and Derrick Byrd who score 8.1 points per game. The supporting cast has been huge for the Javelinas starting with Robert Stevenson who is the conference-leading shot blocker with 16 blocks (26th in Division II) while chipping in six points per contest. Bambrook also has nine blocks ranking fifth in the conference. Will West is another cause for concerns for opponents as he averages 7.8 PPG and has 14 total steals (4th in the LSC).

The Aggies have been playing good basketball since opening their conference schedule. They were edge by now #RV A&M-Commerce 69-68 but knocked off Tarleton State 64-63, entering Hog Heaven 1-1 in conference play. Bryce Eli is the only player with a double-digit scoring average, dropping 15 per game with a 56.9 field goal percentage. He also leads the team with three blocks. The other top scorers are J.V. Long and Tyler Williams, both at 9.6 points per game, Tyus Momoh at 9.5 points, and Johann Tate at 9.3 points.

With both teams splitting the season series a year ago, Cameron leads the all-time series 20-19. Live stats and a live stream will be made available for Military Appreciation Night on the men's basketball schedule page on javelinaathletics.com.
