Hilltoppers Strong Start Key to No. 20 Javelinas Defeat

Texas A&M-Kingsville first loss comes on the road versus St. Edward's

AUSTIN, TexasTrey Sumpter matched his season-high marks of 23 points and seven rebounds but No. 20 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-1, 1-0 LSC) experienced defeat for the first time this season in an 89-72 loss to St. Edward's University (7-2, 0-1 Heartland Conference) Saturday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center.

Every dog has its day, and it was a tough one for the Javelinas who were outshot by the Hilltoppers from the floor, from three-point range, and at the foul line. St. Edward's built a sustainable lead in the first half to knock off the nationally ranked Javelinas who led for just 4.8 percent of the game. Joining Sumpter as top scorers for TAMUK was Will West who poured in 12 points and Jacolby Harris who added 11. James Tayor and Landon Goesling finished with 21 and 20 points, respectively, marking the first time two players scored 20 or more points against the Hogs this season. Dorian Lopez was close to making it three players with 18 points and Sean Watkins had 11 points.

First Half
It was all Hilltoppers early outside of West's triple to score the game's first point. SEU led 10-5 at the first media timeout and stretched the margin to 52-36 by halftime – the largest lead of the half. Trey Sumpter hit a three-pointer with 4:30 on the clock to trim the lead to seven, however, the Hogs went without a bucket until 1:27 when Christian Brambrook hit from downtown for his fifth point of the frame. St. Edward's ended the half on a 14-5 run over the final two and a half minutes.

Sumpter led the Javelinas with 11 points, shooting 3-of-4 from long distance, while West and Jacobly Harris followed with eight points each.

Second Half
Four quick points from West and a three by Sumpter highlighted an 8-2 run to open the second half for the Hogs. With 9:35 on the clock, TAMUK continued to apply pressure with a 5-0 run, but the Hilltoppers responded with two unanswered baskets to go ahead by double-digits, 68-57. The home team continued to push forward and increased their margin to as much as 20 points in the half and handed the Hoggies their first loss, 89-72.
