KINGSVILLE, Texas –
Trey Sumpter logged the first double-double of the season for No. 23 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-1, 2-0 LSC) as they remain undefeated at home with a 63-59 win over Cameron University (4-5, 1-2 LSC) on Thursday night at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center.Â
Â
The win improved the Javelinas to 13-1 at home over their last 14 games and gives them a 5-0 home record to start the season - an accomplishment that has not been done since the 2009-10 campaign. Â
Â
Although a win is a win, this one can be tabbed as a sloppy one if you ask head coach
Johnny Estelle.Â
  Â
"It was a game that had no rhythm," stated coach Estelle. "We came out in the second half and made some stops though. Our defense is what got everything going. We got stops, scored in transition and that opened up the game a little bit."Â
Â
In addition to those stops, the Hogs were very aggressive in the second half and made key free throws to either extend their lead or late in the game, hold off an Aggie comeback.Â
Â
"The first half we were erratic and out of character which really is a credit to Cameron," said Estelle. "We shot 62 percent from the line overall - which was just enough. The bigger deal was that we got 29 free throw attempts, so we were aggressive and more in control in the second half."Â
Â
Sumpter led the team with 13 points and a season-best ten rebounds.
Robert Stevenson also had a season-high of ten rebounds as he chipped in six points and tied
Elton Dyer with two blocks who filled the stat sheet, adding eight points, two rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Joining Dyer was
Caelan Neal and
Will West with eight points apiece, while
Derrick Byrd,
Jacolby Harris,
Cris Boleware, and
Johnnathan Lindsey all scored five points.Â
Â
Tyler Williams tied the game-high with 13 points in the loss and was followed by J.V. Long's 11 points for Cameron. Â Â
Â
First HalfÂ
Sumpter put the Javelinas on the scoreboard first, but the Aggies responded with a 9-0 run in the first six minutes of the game. With 9:23 on the clock, Dyer hit a three-pointer from the corner to buffer a Javelina 11-4 run, pulling the home team within two points 13-11. Although both teams would trade punches for a while, Cameron's 8-2 run to end the frame gave them a 28-21 lead at the half.
Â
Sumpter and Lindsey split ten points evenly to lead the Hogs in scoring and Sumpter paced the team with five rebounds.Â
 Â
Second HalfÂ
CU grabbed its largest lead of the game quickly in the second half at 31-21, however, four straight points by Stevenson sparked an 8-0 run for the Javelinas, cutting the lead to just one point. Moments later, Sumpter knocked down a triple and Harris sunk a freebee to give the Javelinas a 38-37 lead at the 13:38 mark – their first since the opening basket. With the Aggies in the penalty early, TAMUK converted 16-of-25 free throws in the half which proved to be huge in the comeback. Deeper into the stanza as the momentum favored the Hogs, West connected from way downtown, giving the Javelinas the largest lead for both teams, 58-46 with 2:14 on the clock. Minutes later in desperation, Johann Tate heaved up a three-pointer that went in, bringing the score to 59-53 with 37 seconds remaining. Cameron would continue to fight but despite the efforts, the Javelinas stayed hot at the charity stripe and a made free throw by Byrd sealed the game for TAMUK to remain unbeaten at home this season with a 63-59 final. Â
