The Javelinas are not only in search of matching their longest winning streak of the season, but they are also looking to sweep the Rams in a season series for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Texas A&M-Kingsville is fresh off of a 67-53 victory over Angelo State where they forced a season-high 26 turnovers and held the best three-point shooting team in the Lone Star Conference to 4-of-21 from distance.
TAMUK's season scoring average is 71.1 PPG this season and has arguably the top defense in Division II basketball who ranks third in three-point field goal defense, 11th in field goal defense, 13th in turnovers forced and 21st in scoring defense.Â
In the first round this season against ASU, the Hogs leading scorer—Trey Sumpter— paced the team with 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four steals. Three more Javs followed his lead with 12, 11 and ten points from Caelan Neal, Robert Stevenson and Derrick Byrd, respectively.Â
Angelo State has lost five of its last seven games but posts a 6-2 record at home this season. The Rams average 82.1 PPG, while holding their opponents to a .389 clip from the field. ASU also leads the LSC with 5.4 blocks per game and ranks 3rd in Division II with 31.11 defensive rebounds per game. Quay King's scoring average took a hit after scoring just 16 points on Tuesday night against TAMUK, but still leads the team with 18.3 PPG. The Rams also have four other players scoring in double-digits in Steven Price (17 PPG), Lorenzo Dillard (14.3 PPG) and Devonte' Pratt and Thomas Tshikaya who both average 10 points per contest.Â
The Javelinas are closer to .500 in the all-time season series following the win earlier this week that ended a six-game losing streak (52-54). The Javelinas hope to claim its first victory in San Angelo since Feb. 1, 2014 where they defeated the Rams 79-69.
