Volleyball Arrives in Centennial State for Tournament

The Javelinas will have four matches in two days at the ThunderWolves Classic

PUEBLO, Colo. (Volleyball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (5-0) takes its undefeated record to Colorado to participate in the ThunderWolves Classic September 9-10 in the Massari Arena. The Javelinas begin the two-day classic versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members Adams State University (3-2) and Colorado State University-Pueblo (1-4) on day one and close out with against No. 3 Wayne State College (4-0) and Nova Southeastern University (4-0) Saturday.

The Hogs and the Grizzles meet Friday at 10 a.m. CT and battle the host ThunderWolves at 2 p.m. CT. September 10 will feature a couple of intriguing matchups, first against third-ranked Wayne State at 10 a.m. CT and will wrap up the tournament against Sunshine State Conference affiliate Nova Southeastern at 2 p.m. CT.

After dominating its way to a straight set victory over St. Mary's University in Tuesday's home opener, Texas A&M-Kingsville improved to 5-0, marking the first time the club begins the season with five victories since 2012. Hours later, Krystal Faison, Casey Klobedans and Lexi Wick were named to the Christian Brothers Invitational All-Tournament team from the previous weekend. 

Faison leads the Javelinas with 60 kills and is averaging 3.53 kills per set. She has also collected 53 digs and six aces. Klobedans has 176 total assists, 16 kills, 11 blocks and four service aces and Wick has recorded 44 kills, seven aces and a team-high 23 blocks. 

Senior Ashley Bukowski has 52 kills and a club-best nine service aces in 2016 and her three double-doubles tie Klobedans atop the team's leaderboards. TAMUK has received solid contributions from sophomores Haley Hutchinson (27 kills, 15 blocks) and Madison Brabham (18 kills and 11 blocks), and senior Valarie Hill has tallied 10 kills. 

Adams State enters the tournament with a 1-2 record against LSC teams after dropping its last match to No. 19 Angelo State University in straight sets. The Grizzlies defeated West Texas A&M University 3-1 and fell to Eastern New Mexico University 3-2 last weekend. Defensively, Adams State has totaled 36 blocks. 

Mallory Grimsrud leads the way hitting .400 with 79 kills and 18 blocks. Other notable hitters for the Grizzlies include Hannah Atkinson and Nina Mody-Bailey, who have 58 and 50 kills, respectively. Brianna Mariner is No.1 on the team with eight aces to go along with her 40 kills and Katelyn Schwartz navigates the offense with 165 total assists. Adams State is led by Lindy Mortensen, who is in her 11th season.  

CSU-Pueblo (1-4) fell to Texas A&M University-Commerce 3-1 last week and to fellow LSC member Texas Woman's University 3-2. In their home opener on September 7, the ThunderWolves were swept by No. 19 Angelo State. 

Caitlin Broadwell's 67.5 points on 63 kills leads CSU-Pueblo and senior Katie Burnett paces the club with 82 digs and 11 service aces. Mariangel Perez has 43 kills, three blocks and two aces, while Morgan Wilkening has 37 kills and 11 blocks. Jill Muhe is in her first season as head coach. 

Day two will be highlighted with a tough game against No. 3 and undefeated Wayne State. The Wildcats have a hitting percentage of .255 and have limited their opponents to just .127 hitting. As a team, they have totaled 34 blocks and 23 aces. 

Alyssa Frauendorfe leads WSC with 42 kills and has just four attacking errors. Michaela Mestl is next in kills with 40 and adds 55 digs and five aces. Natalie Vondrak rounds out the top three with 39 kills and six service aces. Wayne State College alumni Scott Kneifl is in his 12th season as the head coach for the Wildcats.

The tournament will come to a conclusion for the Javs after a match against Nova Southeastern who will also enter the tournament with a 4-0 record. This will be the Sharks' first set of matches outside of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. 

With a team hitting percentage of .230, NSU has tallied 244 kills, 47 blocks, 29 aces and 16.1 digs per set. Denvyr Tyler-Palmer has an impressive 84 kills, 42 digs, eight blocks and four aces. Katie Pyles leads the club with 184 assists and eight service aces and Maddie Will has 22 total blocks to add to her 15 kills. In her third season as head coach, Jennifer King has an overall record of 36-27 at NSU.  

Texas A&M-Kingsville has a series record of 1-1 against Adams State but Friday marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2003. CSU-Pueblo, Wayne State and Nova Southeastern will face TAMUK for the first time in program history.
