Games 16-19: @TAMUKSB Makes Trip to Cameron for LSC Series


 
KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team (7-8, 1-3 LSC) looks to complete all four games of a Lone Star Conference series this weekend when they travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to take on Cameron (15-2, 0-0 LSC). The Aggies will be playing their first conference games this season because of weather cancellations. Friday's games start at 1 p.m. while Saturday sees the doubleheader first pitch occur at 12 p.m. on McMahon Field.
 
All-Time Series
The Javelinas are up in the all-time series 14-10 over CU, however the Aggies have won seven straight and eight of the last nine meetings. The first 10 meetings all went in favor of TAMUK. All-time in Lawton, the Blue and Gold are 1-3 with their lone victory coming on Feb. 19, 2000 in the first meeting ever between teh two teams.
 
Scouting Texas A&M-Kingsville
Loren Donaldson enters with a team-high .391 batting average. She also leads the team in hits (18) and RBI (9). After going 4-for-7 against last weekend, Rachael Longoria raised her average to .389. Also hitting over .300 for the Javelinas is Haley Boyett (.306), Jaeleen Castro (.341) and Karri Smith (.367).
 
Valerie Ramirez has mashed a team best three home runs and, along with Castro, has driven in eight runs. Both Boyett and Donaldson have hit two homers apiece as well.
 
On the base path, Boyett is a perfect 5-for-5 stealing bases while Castro has yet to be thrown out in her two attempts. Also with two steals this season are Stephanie Lugo and Ramirez.
 
Smith (3-4, 3.66 ERA) has started and completed seven games in the circle. She has thrown a team-high 49.2 innings and is tied for the staff lead with 25 strikeouts with Carlie Clark. Bella Rosas has staff-low 3.62 ERA in 19.1 innings while entering the weekend with a 2-3 record. Clark is 2-1 this year with a 4.13 ERA and is 36th in the nation with 8.6 strikeouts per seven innings.
 
Scouting Cameron
Carly Allerheiligen paces Cameron with a .469 batting average and is one of five players to start all 17 games this season. Breezy McComas has recorded a .440 average with five home runs and 17 RBI and runs. Also hitting over .400 for the Aggies are Paige Daino (.439), Misty Dooley (.415) and Lauren Renneker (.404).
 
Daino leads the squad with 29 RBI and is tied with Tara Martini and Renneker for team lead of eight home runs. McComas comes in having bashed five homers while Sonora Zukerman and Chelsea DeLong have added three and two dingers, respectively. Coming into the series with a team best 22 runs scored is Tara Martini. She has also driven in 23 as well.
 
CU comes in with only nine stolen bases on 11 attempts. Martini paces them with five swipes and has yet to be thrown out. Macy McKay, Allerheiligen, DeLong and Zukerman all have one steal apiece.
 
As a team, the Aggies are batting a Lone Star Conference-high .381 with a .443 on-base and .687 slugging percentages. They have recorded 185 base knocks with 74 going for extra bases. Their 35 home runs are the most in the league while also posting 34 doubles and five triples. Opponents have struck them out 71 times but issued 46 walks and hit their batters 11 times. In the field, CU goes into the weekend with a .971 fielding percentage and have committed just 13 errors.
 
Three pitchers have started a game this season for the Aggies. Kelsey Watson has begun seven contests while Katelyn Craker and Zukerman have each started five. Entering pacing the staff in ERA (2.15), strikeouts (52) and innings (45.2) is Watson. She is 6-1 on the season with two saves, five complete games and three shutouts.
 
Craker goes into the four-game set with a 4-0 record, 3.00 ERA in 30.1 frames and 18 strikeouts. Also having struck out 18 is Zukerman while sports a 5-1 mark and 4.43 ERA. Making three appearance in relief has been Betsey Woodall (0-0, 9.33 ERA, 3.0 IP).
 
As a staff, the Lions have a 3.21 ERA in 109.0 innings. They have recorded four shutouts and three saves while seeing their hurlers toss seven complete games. Opponents are hitting .288 off them with 90 strikeouts and drawing 39 free passes.
 
St. Edward's Doubleheader Postponed
Tuesday scheduled doubleheader at home with St. Edward's was postponed due to rain. Originally pushed back to Wednesday, the twinbill was later rescheduled for April 8.
 
Winning February
Texas A&M-Kingsville completed February with a 6-5 record. It was the first time they have finished the first month of the season with a winning record since 2009 when they went 14-6. The 2012 Javelinas came close, going 8-8 in the first month of the season.
 
K-Town
Carlie Clark has been a strikeout machine at home this season. All 17 of her strikeouts have come in the circle at Hubert Field. In the season opener against Texas A&M International, she struck out eight. She followed with nine versus Huston-Tillotson, including the first three batters of the game on the minimum nine pitches.
 
Bombs Away
TAMUK blasted four homers in the final game of the Southeastern Regional Invitational against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The home run total is the most by the Javelinas in a game since also hitting four at Eastern New Mexico on March 25, 2011.
 
Boyett Goes Yard Twice
Haley Boyett hit two dingers against the Bulldogs, half of TAMUK's total in the game. She is the first Javelina to hit two in a contest since Adela Gomez at Midwestern State on April 20, 2013. The school record is three off the bat of Sarah Norman at Southern Arkansas (Feb. 9, 2002).
 
Single-Game Caught Stealing Mark
Three times the Javelinas were thrown out trying to steal in the season opener against Texas A&M International. The mark tied the school's single-game school record. The last time the Blue and Gold were thrown out thrice in a game was February 1, 2008 versus Texas Woman's in San Antonio, Texas.
 
Season Openers
Texas A&M-Kingsville improved to 11-8 all-time in season openers after defeating Texas A&M International 4-2. They had previously lost two straight with the last win coming in 2012 versus Texas-Permian Basin (13-0, 5 innings).
 
Opening at Home
When beginning their year at Hubert Field, TAMUK is now 8-3. The Javelinas increased their winning streak to six straight dating back to 2004. Their last defeat in a season opener at home came against St. Mary's in 2003. This year was the first time the Blue and Gold began at home in four years.
 
Opening Series
The Javelinas improved to 31-25 all-time in their first series or tournament of a season with a doubleheader sweep of TAMUI. Last season TAMUK went 2-3 last season to begin the year at a tournament hosted by St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas.
 
LSC Preseason Poll
Texas A&M-Kingsville was picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Lone Star Conference this year by head coaches, sports information directors and various media members and sports information directors. Last season the Javelinas were also picked eighth when the conference consisted of eight programs. This is the second time in three years the Blue and Gold have been picked to finish next to last in the LSC.
