NEW YORK, New York – Both the men's and women's Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field teams finished first at the Ramapo College Indoor Select in the New York Armory Saturday night. The men finished with 109 points, 30 better than the host school, while the women totaled 82 points even though they brought only 10 competitors.
Lutalo Boyce paced the men by breaking the school and Lone Star Conference record in the long jump for the third meet in-a-row. He finished first in the event with a leap of 25-7.75 (7.80m) which is the best in Division II and ranks sixth over all three divisions.
Also taking titles for the men in the field events were
Derek Tesch and
Jordan Yamoah in the weight throw and pole vault, respectively. Tesch posted a provisional distance of 57-3.75 (17.47m), the second best in the conference, while Yamoah cleared a height of 16-0.75 (4.90m) to better his provisional height by a little over seven inches.
Courtney Macon won the 60m hurdles in 8.13, the fourth best in the conference.
Five first place finishes were recorded by the women.
Kaina Martinez took the 200m dash with a provisional and LSC best time of 24.79.
Amber Perry won the 400m by crossing the finish line in 56.68 while she,
Jasmine Miller,
Kathy Trevino and Martinez teamed up to take the 4x400m relay title. They bettered their provisional qualifying time (3:50.33) by a second and a half.
In the field events,
Aricela Alvarez leapt 37-6.75 (11.45m) in the triple jump and
Valerie Vrana tossed a shot 42-8.75 (13.02m) to come in first.
Deon Hope recorded a runner-up finish in the 60m dash (6.91) while missing the provisional time by one hundredth of a second. He also came in fifth with a time of 22.34 in the 200m dash.
Also in the 60m, Boyce ran 7.00 for fifth and the fifth fast time in the LSC. He won his heat in 7.02 to qualify for the finals.
The men's 200m saw two other top 10 finishes for the Javelinas as well.
Raul Cervantes crossed the line in 22.25 for third and
Francisco Javier Lopez placed eighth in 22.69.
Cervantes also crossed the line in third in the 400m dash with a provisional time of 48.74 while Lopez placed third as well in the 60m hurdles in 8.17.
Michal Idziak bettered his LSC best time in the 800m (1:51.09) by over a second on the way to a runner-up finish.
A height of 6-11.75 (2.13m) was cleared by
Jeron Robinson in the high jumper while
Richard Cervantes recorded a distance of 51-5.75 (15.69m) as they both came in second in their events.
Two fourth place finishes came from
Javan Gray in the shot put (48-10.75; 14.90m) and
Richard Cervantes in the weight throw (45-3.50; 14.11m).
In the women's 60m,
Brittney Holcombe crossed the line second in 7.72. Miller came in fifth by five thousandths of a second in the finals as well.
Miller placed third with a time of 25.58 in the 200m while Holcombe was five spots back.
Also in running events, Trevino was third in the 400m (57.65) and
Valerie Rodriguez crossed the line eighth in the 800m (2:23.18).
Just missing a provisional mark by 0.01m in the long jump was Alvarez. She leapt 18-3.0 (5.56m) on her way to a third place finish.
The Blue and Gold are off until the Lone Star Conference Championships. The meet will take place in Lubbock, Texas on February 28 and March 1.
