GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Baseball) – Erase the fifth inning and the Javelinas pitching staff dominated the afternoon. No. 21 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (0-1) fell victim to a big inning by Ouachita Baptist University (3-1) and could not overcome a four-run deficit as the Tigers upset Kingsville, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon at QuikTrip Park.
Â
All five of the Tigers' hits and four runs came in the fifth inning as day one of the QuikTrip Division II Classic saw the Lone Star Conference members – TAMUK and West Texas A&M University – fall.
Cline Andrews went 2-for-4 with a run scored,
Miles Holcomb 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Wesley Aguilar drove in a runner.
Â
Hayden James (0-1) cruised the Tigers order the first 4.0 innings, but things quickly unraveled in the bottom of the fifth as a bases clearing triple allowed Ouachita Baptist to take a 3-0 lead. OBU followed with an RBI-double for a four-lead lead. James was charged with a loss after going 5.0 innings, striking out four. Tigers right-hander John Franklin Matros (1-0) earned the win in his season debut, striking out 10 in 7.0 innings of work. Lance Cullum, fresh off earning Great American Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Â
Dustin Luna and
Weston Silverberg combined for 3.0 no-hit innings of relief.
Â
Down 4-0 heading into the sixth, the Javelinas mounted a comeback after back-to-back singles by
Ryan Fickel and
Brayton Carlson to begin the frame. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Fickel came around to score on a Holcomb sacrifice fly. Beginning the top of the seventh with a runner on after a leadoff single by Andrews, Texas A&M-Kingsville had runners on first and second with one out following
Clint Wallace's hit by pitch. Aguilar singled through the left side to drive in Andrews, cutting Kingsville's deficit to 4-2.
Â
Hayden Vesely came off the bench for a pinch-hit single.
Â
The Javelinas return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available and can be accessed by visiting JavelinaAthletics.com.
